NR food shelf hopes to raise $5,000 in July

Written by

The month of July is another month that is becoming a fund raiser for the New Richland Area Food Shelf.

The NRAFS has been invited and is registered for the 2014 Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless July Challenge Grant, which is extended to all food shelves that are  members of Hunger Solutions MN.  The grant is based on the amount of money a food shelf can raise in July.

The NRAFS is able to receive a minimum of $150 up to a maximum of $5000.

Ellendale Days starts Thursday

By JIM LUTGENS

Editor/Publisher

Roger Swearingen was born and raised in Ellendale and, except for a stint in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s, has lived there all his life.

For upwards of 20 years, Swearingen faithfully served Ellendale as the town’s maintenance man.

Since 2012, he’s been known as Mayor Swearingen.

On Saturday, he’ll assume another role — grand marshal of the 2014 Ellendale Days Parade.

“It’s quite an honor,” said Swearingen. “I didn’t expect it.”

Medallion clue No. 2!

Written by

Clue No. 2 has been released as folks search for the Farm and City Days medallion.

If found, the medallion should be turned in to New Richland City Hall.

Clue No. 2:

Park and look all you want. Advice to you would be run or walk. Round and round the people go. Keep in mind 2 and 3!

All the directions just pick two. Now just think north, south, east, west. Don’t worry just do your best.

Listening off straight ahead you are sure to hear a bang. Off to my left is a county road. Off to my right are many you could say that are wise. Keep in mind direction is the key.

‘Fun Nuns’ presentation June 24 in Ellendale

Join the “Fun Nuns,” Sister Michelle Meyers and Sister Kay O’Neil, for “Life is too short not to have a good time. Developing the Art of Affirmation.”

Accept, appreciate, and applaud the people with whom we live and work! How we think about others influences whether we appreciate or disparage them. As we focus on the positive qualities of others, we can learn to validate them. Practicing the art of affirmation makes a difference. We can make that difference with everyone.

Little Miss/Mr. Contest one of many new Farm & City Days events

By JIM LUTGENS

It will be a little bit country, a little bit city — just like the celebration it kicks off.

A new event, The Little Miss/Little Mister Pageant, will open 2014 Farm and City Days festivities on Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m. at New Richland City Hall.

It’s open to youth age 4-7 who have a New Richland address and includes two divisions, Little Miss/Little Mr. Farmer and Little Miss/Little Mr. City.

“It’s something everyone should come and see, young and old,” said event organizer Jennie Johnson. “We hope to see a lot of people come and watch these children.”

Did you know?

Today, two out of three people diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. are surviving (for at least five years). In fact, every day more than 400 people celebrate birthdays who would have otherwise been lost to the disease.

Did you know?

The American Cancer Society contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since the early 1990s. That means they’ve helped save nearly 1.2 million lives during that time.

Did you know?

The ACS has played a role in nearly every cancer research breakthrough in recent history.

Geneva Cancer Run Saturday

Written by

By KATHY PAULSEN

Staff Writer

They are on the road again. The 3rd Annual Geneva Cancer Run will take place on Saturday, June 14 in Geneva. Each rider pays $10 to participate.

Deeanne Randall lost her grandparents and many best friends to cancer over the years, so she came up with the idea of having a Geneva Motorcycle Run.

In the first year, 80 motorcycle riders participated, and this past year about 120 riders came out. The Cancer Run organizers are hoping to reach 200 riders this year.
