The Waseca Area Foundation awarded grants to benefit the NRHEG School District and the New Richland Care Center at a ceremony held November 17 at the Waseca Junior High School Media Center. The grants came from the EFJ Foundation Fund, which is a fund of the Waseca Area Foundation. In total, 22 grants were handed out to different organizations that evening.

The first award was a $3,000 EFJ Scholarship to be presented to a NRHEG senior this coming spring. The next award was another $3,000 to be used to purchase six iPads for use in three special education classrooms.

“This is the first time we have applied for a grant like this,” said Sue Stieglbauer, Special Education Case Facilitator at NRHEG School. “Gail Schmidt was instrumental in helping us obtain the grant.”

“We will be using them on a regular basis in the classrooms,” said Angie Aaseth, NRHEG Technology Coordinator. “The iPads are very versatile and a great educational tool.”

New Richland Care Center Administrator Mikenzi Hebel accepted a $1,400 grant for a new resident whirlpool tub. The facility has been raising funds and received donations for the new tub for the past few months. The cost of the tub and peripherals is around $20,000.

“We are excited about the new tub,” said Hebel. “It is scheduled to be delivered December 20th. We are sure the residents will enjoy it as well.

The EFJ Foundation Fund, which was absorbed by the Waseca Area Foundation in 2007, administers grants per the Johnson family’s original guidelines. The WAF now comprises more than 50 funds, totaling more than  $5.5 million dollars. The New Richland Area Foundation Fund started in 2008 with an anonymous donation of $13,918.

With a large anonymous donation of grain and many miscellaneous donations, the fund has grown to approximately $43,099. Additionally, the By The Grace of God Fund has been established with an amount of $26,000. Various groups and organizations in the New Richland community have been the recipients of a total of $86,400 in the last two years. The money has come from the NRAFF, the NR BTGOG, WAF, EFJ Foundation Fund, SMIF, the Rosenau’s and Grace Lutheran Church.

“We have worked hard the last two years introducing and educating the public of this opportunity given to the New Richland area,” said New Richland Area Foundation Fund representative Gail Schmidt. “The NRAFF is a community advised fund and we are able to grant around 5 percent of the balance each year. The BTGOG Fund is donor advised; the donors can decide what they want to grant each year.”

“With the help and guidance of the Waseca Area Foundation, this has been an amazing two years for the New Richland area,” said Schmidt. “I am both honored and humbled to be part of this whole experience. We will continue to strive for growth in our fund so that we can continue to give back to the New Richland area. Always remember Local Money-Local Projects-Local People.”
