Sixteen years ago, Matt Felt and Nick Marsolek played pool together. They both had a talent and a passion for the game.

When Matt lost his battle with cancer in 2007, at the young age of 26, Nick came back playing the game as a tribute to his buddy, and it shows. This is the third year in a row that Nick has been on the winning team in the Fourth Annual Matt Felt Memorial Pool Tournament Nov. 25-26 at Geneva Bar & Grill.

All the teams were winners as they played in honor of Matt and for the benefit of others just like him.  Another member of the top team, Jeremy “Budda” Williams, has been a two-time winner of the tournament. The third person on the winning team this year was Robert Ortega. A total of 24 three-person teams paid $60 apiece to participate, coming from Geneva, Albert Lea, Austin, Clarks Grove, Manchester, New Richland, Owatonna and Mankato.

The tournament began at 7 Friday night, and resumed at 9 Saturday morning, concluding about 9 Saturday night. The win netted the first-place team $650. The second-place team, Rich Neuman, Bob Garza and Dave Sandon, won $500; the third-place team, Susan Simes, Charles Garza, and Holly Kuss won $340, and the fourth-place team of Toby Oquist, Troy Oquist and Jon Munson took home $200.

The tournament wasn't "winners take all" as there were also awards presented in the "Hard Luck” bracket. Earning first-place honors in that division was the Jeff Young team from Austin, who won $250; the Joe Farr team took second place and earned $125.

Geneva Bar & Grill donated $250 to the winner’s bracket and $100 to the hard luck bracket.

Geneva Bar & Grill has hosted the event each year and had two pool tables set up at the bar, and rented six more tables from D & R Star, set up in the back portion of the Southern Minnesota Electric building across the street from the bar. The pool tables were all sponsored by several local businesses, including Broskoff Structures Inc,; Sorenson’s Appliance and TV; Twin Lakes Pub 69; Bend In The Road of Manchester; Poor House Bar of Clarks Grove; D & R Star of Austin and Rochester, and Geneva Bar & Grill.

Several local businesses also help sponsor the tournament, including Dale Miller and the 3 In One Bar of Hollandale; Harold’s Bar of Albert Lea and the Poor House Bar of Clarks Grove.

Barb McKinney of Geneva Bar & Grill, and Doug Felt, Matt’s dad, again organized the tournament, and thank all of the participants and businesses who helped sponsor the tournament.

All profits from the tournament will all be donated to help fight cancer.

The 2012 Geneva Cancer Auction will be held the weekends of January 6-7 and 14-15.
