Last season, LeSueur-Henderson may have caught the NRHEG girls’ basketball team by surprise in the season opener.

There was none of that this year.

The Panthers — returning almost everyone from a team that finished 23-4 a year ago — jumped to a 38-22 halftime lead and totally dominated the second half while winning 82-25 in New Richland Nov. 29, avenging last year’s season-opening loss to the Giants.

According to NRHEG head coach John Schultz, defense was the difference.

“Our pressure defense was working, resulting in a lot of lay-ups,” said Schultz. “I was happy with our defense really playing well in the second half, allowing only three points.”

The Panthers converted 22 of 55 shots from two-point range and made six of 18 threes. The Giants were 8-for-32 and 1-for-10. Both squads were 6-for-11 at the free-throw line. The Panthers had 24 assists to the Giants’ eight. NRHEG outrebounded LSH 28-26 and had 18 turnovers to 32 for the visitors.

NRHEG individual leaders: Carlie Wagner 34 points, three rebounds, four assists, five steals; Jade Schultz 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists; Kayla Lindell eight points; Abby Crabtree seven points, three steals; Anna Schlaak seven points, three rebounds, seven assists, five steals, three blocks; Danielle Krueger five points; Tori Raimann two points, three rebounds; Katie Cole two points, three rebounds; Hannah Lundberg two points, three rebounds, three steals; Raelin Schue two points.

“All our kids scored and played very well defensively,” said Schultz. “We had 24 assists as a team, which tells me the kids are really passing the ball well. It was a great team win. I was very impressed with how well all the kids played their roles tonight. Anna Schlaak had a nice overall game.”

The Panthers’ B-squad won 62-15.

The Panthers traveled to Belle Plaine Friday and cruised to a 71-41 win after leading 32-26 at halftime.

“We had some foul trouble, turnovers and cold shooting combine to create frustration in the first half,” said Coach Schultz. “We stuck with the game plan in the second half and wore them down to pull away.”

Raimann was 5-for-8 from three-point range to spark the Panthers throughout the game, according to Schultz, who said Lundberg came off the bench to provide a boost in several areas.

Individual totals: Wagner 28 points, seven assists, seven steals; Raimann 17 points; Jade Schultz 11 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots; Lundberg six points, seven rebounds, five steals; Cole five points, seven rebounds; Schlaak four points, six rebounds, five steals.

The Panthers outrebounded Belle Plaine 47-22.

NRHEG’s B-squad won 55-30.

The Panthers faced Mankato Loyola Tuesday, Dec. 6. They host Bethlehem Academy Tuesday, Dec. 13.
