According to coach Pat Churchill, the NRHEG boys’ basketball team learned a lot from last Friday’s season opener against Kenyon-Wanamingo.

Unfortunately, they were tough lessons.

The Panthers came out on the short end of some key exchanges and incurred a technical foul while falling 69-60 at New Richland.

The first half was close until the visitors opened a 35-29 lead at halftime, converting a basket after a Panther turnover.

“So, instead of having a chance to be down two, we were down six, which was a big moment of the game I thought,” said Churchill.

In the second half, KW stretched the lead to 14 during a four-minute stretch during which Churchill said the Panthers lost their composure.

“It was too tough to get back in it,” said the coach.

NRHEG’s individual leaders: Sam Lundberg four points, four rebounds, three steals; Matt Carlson 18 points; Lucas Meyer five points, five assists; Tyler Sorenson 16 points, eight rebounds; Carter Tollefson two points; Spencer Hanna 12 points; Nic Mangskau three points.

“Our kids battled all the way to the end and fought hard but it wasn't enough tonight,” said Churchill. “I believe we played O.K. We are disappointed for sure that we lost tonight, but there are a lot of positives we can take from this game. We can build off those good things we did and correct some of the mistakes. We didn't do a very good job in defensive transition and we got out rebounded pretty bad. We would play a good possession of defense, make them take a tough shot and give up an offensive rebound put-back. Those kind of things just break your back defensively. Tyler Sorenson and Matt Carlson had nice games offensively. Tyler did a good job on the boards getting us second chance points and Matt hit a few threes for us. Spencer Hanna had a very good game off the bench with 12 points. That was the best game I've seen him play, not just offensively but he had to bang with some bigger stronger boys today and he held his own.”

The Panthers hosted Mankato Loyola Tuesday, Dec. 6. They play at Bethlehem Academy the next Tuesday.
