NRHEG School Board

By REED WALLER

Staff Writer

The NRHEG School Board has scheduled a work session for Monday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m.

In past years work sessions have been dominated by discussion about budgetary problems and staff and program cuts due to restricted finances and declining enrollment. This session will be to come up with solutions to ensure adequate resources for a growing elementary student bodyenrollment.

In a related action, the board approved the purchase of a 10-passenger van, price not to exceed $25,000.

The district has a schedule wherein they purchase buses and lease or purchase minivans on a rotation basis. This time growing need calls for a larger vehicle.

“I think we may have exceeded minivan class,” said Supt. Kevin Wellen, referring to the increasing Elementary Special Education numbers.

Hearing problem

While the board examined a $2,500 payment to LinguaOne, Inc. for ASL translator and materials for New Richland High School, Supt. Wellen reviewed the situation with the company.

Wellen informed the board that the company has been dismissed because it had “proved disreputable.”not made its contract.

They provided a teacher-translator who Wellen affirmed was good, but when she became unavailable, it was four days before a substitute showed up, the substitute who provided proved to be inadequate, and the district was without services for several days.

The administration is pursuing action to take against the company. “We believe they are in breach of contract,” said Wellen.

In the meantime, Wellen told the board that,  they intend plan to “eliminate the middle man,” since the company is effectively in breach of contract, and are seeing about hiring the previously-provided translator directly.

Hires – Resignations

Lisa Brandon was approved for hire as Elementary Special Education instructor. Two paraprofessionals were also hired.

Resignation was accepted from Assistant Volleyball coach Trevor Janich, who will be leaving to pursue his degree.

Winter coaching contracts were approved.

2011-2012 Winter Coaches are:

Boys Basketball: Head - Pat Churchill; Assistant - Isaiah Lundberg; Junior High - Spencer Busho; Junior High - Darian Baker.

Girls Basketball: Head - John Schultz; Assistant - Grant Berg; Junior High - Sharon Ramaker; Junior High - Paul Koziolek.

Wrestling: Head - Paul Cyr; Assistant - Shawn Larson; Junior High - Andrew Peterson.

Cheerleading - Kari Buendorf.

Regarding the status of 9th grade basketball, Wellen told the board that assignments would be made if and when necessary, but it was not yet certain whether there would be any. Students have signed up, but not everyone has paid their fees.

“We have enough players (to justify hiring coaches) if everyone comes through,” Wellen said.

Softball field?

The Facilities Committee will be examining a suggestion by the softball coach and assistant coach, to build a new softball field on the district’s western property in New Richland. The frequent unusability of the New Richland softball field due to chronic flood conditions has cost an unacceptable amount of playing time, and the field at Ellendale is less than ideal due to lack of a home run fence or adequate parking.

Donations and Fundraising

Funds totaling $15,623.95 were presented to Camp Courage, the Ellendale and the New Richland Food Shelf, and the Steele, Freeborn and Waseca County Human Services, from the NRHEG FFA Corn Drive.

Numerous contributors have donated funds for Eagle Bluff, including the PTO with $1,460, but the event is still underfunded.

Truth in Taxation

The annual Truth in Taxation meeting, where the public may hear and inquire about the district’s budget, will be held Monday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the New Richland Media Center.
