Nancy Jane’s Bakery celebrates two years on NR’s main street

Nancy Jane Klecker, a Geneva community resident, is truly the little engine that could.

While working at a bakery in 1982, Klecker discovered her true passion in life.

"I absolutely love baking," said Klecker.

So, in 1987 she went to baking school, where her creativity was unleashed. As she mixed ingredients, rolled and kneaded dough, her love of baking continued to soar. And, thoughts of one day having her own bakery began to blossom.

As Klecker continued to work and explore the magic of baked goods, her desire grew stronger. Moving forward with her idea, the shy woman rounded up enough courage to present her plan to a financial institution. Klecker was turned down. However, that was not going to stop her.

Believing in her master plan, Klecker was determined to achieve her ultimate goal. She found herself walking through the doors of financial institutions five more times before she received the answer she long desired.

On November 30, 2009, Nancy Jane's Bakery, located at 118 North Broadway in New Richland, opened its doors.

"Nancy Jane's is an old-fashioned, real bakery," Klecker said. "Everything is made from quality, scratch ingredients."

As Klecker looks forward to her quickly approaching two-year anniversary, she reflects upon her learning experiences thus far.

"I've made a few mistakes along the way," Klecker said."I underestimated how much I could handle, and hired too many employees right off the bat."

Klecker’s day begins at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. She arrives at the bakery at 2:30 a.m. to begin preparations for the day. At 6 a.m., the doors are unlocked for customers to arrive until 2 p.m.

Saturdays are a little different in that she closes at noon for a thorough cleaning of all equipment, supplies and public areas.

Currently, Nancy Jane's Bakery has three team members, in addition to Klecker.

"My husband Harold fries donuts, and makes deliveries; while Teresa assists with preparation and serves customers, and Franklin cleans the bakery every day after school," Klecker said.

Klecker continues to find fulfillment in life by doing what is truly in her heart.

"Don't take a job for the money, do what you love as a means of exchange, " said Klecker. "Work harder, give yourself the extra push, and at the end of the day take a big breath because tomorrow is a new day."

Encouraging people to try something new, and seeing a youngster’s delight dancing over his face snuggled against the counter glass, keeps this "little engine that could," going.
