“In the summertime, I oversee the St. Olaf Lake Park activities as well,” Schuller said. “I like the variety in my job. It always keeps things interesting.”
New desk adventures always on the horizon, she has one goal. And that is to do her job well, amid a small town she calls home.
“Sometimes, Wayne and I are put in the difficult position of trying to enforce city ordinances and policies, while trying to maintain relationships with people outside of work situations,” Schuller said. “I try my best to separate work and social relationships.”
All in all though, this job is perfect for Schuller. It keeps her busy, close to her family and the hours are flexible when need be.
“The job usually allows time for family obligations,“ Schuller said. “I’m able to attend kids’ school activities, which is important to me.”
To make matters even better, Billing has been very understanding when it comes to her passion for coaching junior high volleyball and track the past few years.
“I do see me being here for a long time, provided it continues to be the right fit for me and my family,” Schuller said.
If there’s one thing she’s learned from working here, it's to ask questions. You can’t make assumptions based on words printed in the paper or heard on the street.
“We bounce ideas off of each other, and lend each other support as need be,” Schuller said. “Having good co-workers makes this job fun too.”
Knowing she’s not alone sets her mind at ease, but that doesn’t mean it remains idle. For one thing, city rules and regulations are always changing.
“Having an assistant here allows the clerk to take care of all the other projects that come up without the constant interruption for daily activities,” Schuller said.
It can be a demanding role to play every day, but Schuller has more than enough gusto to tackle it. She enjoys every last bit of interaction with citizens and visitors to the New Richland area.
“My mom and I were in the insurance business for Farmer’s Insurance when I started here part time,” Schuller said. “Eventually, we decided the insurance business wasn't for us.”
Ever since then, she’s been a full-time city employee.
“I believe New Richland is a great little town,” Schuller said. “I'd like to see it continue to be a great place to raise a family.”
