The NRHEG football team finished the regular season on a positive note, pulling off a come-from-behind 14-12 upset at Maple River last Wednesday.

The Panthers, who improved to 4-3 in the Gopher Conference AA Division and 4-4 overall, drew the No. 4 seed in the Section 2A tournament, earning the right to host No. 5 Kenyon-Wanamingo Tuesday, Oct. 25 in New Richland. The winner plays Saturday at 7 p.m. at top-seeded WEM.

The Maple River win was big because the Eagles still had a chance to tie for the conference championship if WEM had lost. But the Panthers made it a moot point.

“I couldn't be more proud of these guys,” said NRHEG coach Dan Stork. “It seems like I say that every week, but these guys are so fun to coach. They never quit. They play with such heart and passion for the game.”

After a scoreless first quarter at Mapleton, the Panthers struck first, taking a 6-0 lead in the second period on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Sam Lundberg to Lucas Meyer. The PAT failed.

The Eagles tied it 6-6 at halftime on a 16-yard run.

The home team took a 12-6 lead in the third.

A one-yard touchdown run by Geoff Ramaker tied it in the fourth quarter. Lundberg passed to Dillon Parpart for the two-point conversion and the winning margin.

Ramaker, a senior playing only his second game of the season because of injury, had his second straight 100-yard game, totaling 103 on 27 carries. Lundberg hit eight of 15 passes for 131 yards and two interceptions. David Lassahn caught four passes for 79 yards.

Defensively, Casey Rosacker had an interception and a fumble recovery for the Panthers. Kevin Minter also had an interception and Parpart, who led the team with nine tackles, recovered a fumble.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” said Stork. “I made the comment in the huddle after the game that if we handed out game balls I would need about 15 of them. Samo said, ‘We just need one team ball.’ He nailed it. It was a total team effort.”
