New teacher has a passion for her job

Music could be called the language of the world.

Who doesn't listen to and enjoy music or at least have some interest regardless of the language or tempo?

Think about it. What one thing that is a part of every country speaks of joy, happiness, devotion, or movement, more than music? We all enjoy a little toe tapping, moving to the rhythm and being moved by the sound.

Music is that important, and we are lucky to have one of the best music makers available to teach our children at NRHEG how much music matters.

Inquiring when Jennifer Fredrickson, the new elementary music and choir teacher at NRHEG, knew that she wanted to be a teacher, she quickly replied, since third or fourth grade.

Fredrickson was born into a family of teachers. Both her parents were teachers. Her family believes in education, and have made it their passion for many years.

Fredrickson continued to keep the thought of being a teacher in her mind and, when she progressed into junior high, she decided that she wanted to be a music teacher.

Fredrickson grew up in the Tower-Soudan area of Minnesota, about a hour and a half north of Duluth.  She graduated from the Tower-Soudan High School and went on to attend Mesabi Community College for two years. She furthered her education at Jamestown, North Dakota and earned her K-12 music education degree, which includes vocal, instrumental and general music. She later earned her Masters Degree in Education from St. Mary's University in Winona.

Her first teaching experience was a part-time position at Carrington, ND for one year. Fredrickson then went to Minneapolis and was a substitute teacher. There she gave private voice and piano lessons until she was hired by the Lakeville School District where she taught at Kenwood Trail Middle School for 10 years.

Her job there was eliminated last March because of budget reasons. Once Fredrickson got the news, she checked out the St. Cloud State Education Web site and learned the NRHEG School District was looking for a music teacher.

Fredrickson is married and she and her husband, Al, live in Eagan. When asked if she and Al had children, she said, yes, lots of them. She said all of the children she teaches at school have become family to her. She enjoys working with kids, appreciates their sense of humor and appreciates their energy. All this helps keep the days going. It’s never boring.

Fredrickson’s husband also has a degree in education and has taught music for a number of years. He is currently working for the Data Recognition Corporation in Woodbury and scores the MCA tests, which test students’ knowledge in English and math. Fredrickson’s sister, Julie, lives in Rosemount and she too is involved in education and teaches early childhood and family education.

Fredrickson has already started a select vocal ensemble at the high school called Panthera Vox Musica, (musical voice of the panther) and has directed several musicals in the past. She participated in "Bye Bye Birdie" while in high school.

Fredrickson plays both the piano and trumpet. She and her husband both sing in their church choir at Mount Calvery in Eagan.

Fredrickson is happy to be able to continue to have a job in education and thrilled to be at NRHEG. She begins her day in Ellendale teaching the kindergarten through fourth-grade students. She then drives to New Richland, has lunch there, and spends the afternoons with the seventh and eighth-grade varsity choir and 9-12-grade concert choir.
