One of Parriott’s winning numbers was 37, which matched a 37 on the ticket with the amount of $200,000 below it.
“You have just won $200,000,” Young told Parriott.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Parriott.
To be on the safe side, Parriott went to the State Bank of New Richland and secured the ticket inside a safe deposit box.
“I was taking my wife Kathryn to Albert Lea later that afternoon to celebrate a birthday,” said Parriott. “I wanted the ticket in a safe place.”
Regional State Lottery offices can only pay up to $30,000, so Parriott traveled to the Lottery Headquarters in Roseville on Friday, August 5 to claim his prize.
“There were quite a few people standing in line redeeming tickets,” said Parriott. “When I showed them my ticket, they directed me to an area which had higher security. The whole process took about two hours.”
While waiting, Parriott and his family were treated to food and refreshments. Per state law, winners have to go through a short screening process before proceeds can be issued. If you owe any back taxes, child support, or have any court-ordered judgments against you, the amounts are deducted from the winnings. Last but not least, state and federal lump sum taxes are subtracted. Winners are photographed for future lottery promotions and to assure the public the prizes are going to real people. Parriott’s picture will be on the lottery’s drawing show this Wednesday (Aug. 10) at 6:25 p.m. on KEYC-TV (Mankato) and other local channels. As with any windfall, the chances of people wanting donations or scams is likely.
“They [State Lottery] told me I would probably receive quite a few calls,” said Parriott, smiling. “I have a caller ID system at home just in case.”
