The New Richland City Council met for the second time in July Monday evening, July 25 with everyone except council member Anthony Martens in attendance.

The agenda and consent agenda items were approved, except a pay request from the engineering firm of Bolten & Menk for work on WWTF improvements. The city is awaiting approval from Public Finance Authority (PFA) on the funding for the project, which is expected soon.

Maintenance supervisor Ryan Nissen was on hand with several items of business for the council. Nissen explained some of the American flags are in need of replacement. The council approved the purchase of six flags with poles at a cost of $167.94 plus tax. The concession stand at Legion Field needs two new doors, which was approved. Nissen also inquired about the supports on the wing for plowing snow. It is showing wear and is in need of a re-build or replacement. The council approved the purchase of a para-glide system at a cost of $4,240.

The council and Nissen talked at some length about Well #1. It is the main well for the city located in the water plant. The well has been in use for about 70 years and may have started to show signs of its age. Further investigation and inspection will be necessary at some time in the future. Meanwhile, residents can be assured the tap water is totally safe.

Brad Field from PeopleService updated the council on the Dogwood Avenue sewer project.

“They are currently working on the section from the creek north to Second Street,” said Field.

Reggie Edwards, Region Nine representative, introduced himself to the council and gave an overview of some of Region Nine’s accomplishments this past year. Region Nine is made up of the counties of Waseca, Blue Earth, Faribault, Martin, Watonwan, Brown, Sibley, Nicollet and LeSueur. The council was most interested in renewable energy programs the city might qualify for.

“There are flat roofs in the community which could be used to house solar panels,” said Edwards.

Edwards and the council discussed wind turbines and what other cities are doing with renewable energy. Mayor McShane and the council thanked Edwards for his visit and information.

The last item of business was the annual Fire Relief Pension report, which was approved.

The next New Richland City Council meeting will be Monday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m.
