Ellendale residents display variety of skills for Community Idol competition

The first Ellendale Community Idol contest really was much more like Ellendale's Got Talent. Performers were slow to register, although fearless, in spotlighting their talents on Friday, July 15 during Ellendale Days festivities.

Two-year-old Alana Sorum, accompanied by her mother Barb, delighted the audience with her song stylings of the hippo song, and a squashing of a bumblebee, although a hushed silence washed over the crowd when she recited a poem in Hungarian.

The Ferguson Sisters — Millie Flugum, Alice Richards and Rosie Peterson — pleased visitors with songs they sang in their barn years ago. They learned to harmonize while milking cows. They sang Springtime in the Rockies, You are my Sunshine, and enticed the crowd with A Tinker, Tailor, Soldier and Sailor, waiting at the old barn door for none other than the milkmaid. However, yodeling was icing on the cake for listeners.

Five-year-old Kia Otto played to the judge, Pastor Lisa Dodd of United Methodist Church, with her sweet rendition of Jesus Loves Me.

Nicole Eden, 13, really made the "Sparks Fly" when she sang a song with the same title, and Meet Me in the Pouring Rain.

"I've always liked to sing, and it was fun to participate in the Idol event,” Eden said.

Whitney McCamish charmed the audience with her talent of hula hooping while texting.

"I was really nervous, I've only been hula hooping for about a year, and I added texting two days ago," said McCamish.

Jan Prescher performed a beautifully soothing piano instrumental of the Dances with the Wolves medley.

Dani Reiter was not detoured by the sound person’s technical difficulties, when she sang her heart out to her song selection.

Ten-year-old Kade Reese played a mean piano solo that mesmerized the crowd. Finally, two-year-old Harmony Piepho captivated the attendees with her playful bashfulness of Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

The goal of event organizers was for all participants, and audience alike, to have fun and a grand time. Mission accomplished.

"The contestants were very good,” said Lily Neitzel. “I enjoyed each one. It would be hard to decide on one winner."

Contest judges Emily Otto, Rich Draper and Pastor Dodd did indeed find the decision difficult.

Third place went to Kade Reese. He amazed the judges. His performance was totally unexpected, and absolutely without clinkers.

Second place went to Nicole Eden, whom the judges found musically talented. They were charmed by her Rapunzel appearance.

Taking claim of this competition was Whitney McCamish, who left the judges raving yet mystified with her creatively unique talent.

In addition, the Ferguson Sisters received honorable mention for their yodeling presentation.

Overall, it was a star-studded evening of uniquely gifted individuals who lavishly entertained all.
