Ellendale City Council

Somehow, Canada let Ellendale Mayor Steve Engel return to Minnesota so he could preside over the council meeting conducted Thursday evening, July 14. Acting Mayor Scott Groth relinquished the gavel to Engel as all members were present to approve the evening’s agenda.

Maintenance supervisor Roger Swearingen wanted to publicly thank Floyd Davidson for help with pest control.

“Floyd sprayed around the public buildings and ball fields for mosquitoes prior to Ellendale Days,” said Swearingen. “His help is greatly appreciated.”

Swearingen presented two bids for an electric pump for a lift station. The council accepted the low bid of $4,857. There was discussion about driveway tile issues and also an update on 8th Avenue water and sewer installation. Swearingen expressed a need for a temporary road to allow access to Ertel Field for this weekend’s ball tournaments.

The council accepted the minutes from the June 23rd meeting as printed, as well as bills and claims presented.

City clerk Steve Louks submitted two applications for the cleaning position at the Municipal Liquor Store. It was decided both candidates would be interviewed at a later date.

Mayor Engel inquired about the ongoing railroad business and the ability of council member Groth to sign checks in the mayor’s absence.

The council recognized visitors Mark Domeier and Tiffany Krueger who had issues with the recently constructed Assembly of God Church youth center.

“I think it [the center] is great for the community,” said Domeier.

Domeier noted hearing loud music late one evening and expressed concern for the safety of neighborhood children in a building supported only by cinder blocks.

Krueger inquired about the height of the structure and the fact there are not any ice cleats installed on the roof.

“The snow blows off the roof right into my grandpa’s [Gil Nelson] driveway,” said Krueger.

Mayor Engel noted the letter which had been submitted outlining concerns. He assured the visitors that he would bring it to the attention of the city attorney.

City clerk Louks mentioned the need for a chlorine pump at the water plant. The council approved the purchase of a new pump at $1,420. No bids had been received on the old lawn mower, however, several people had stopped to inspect it.

Information received from the census bureau puts the population of Ellendale at 691 as of April 1, 2010. The census listed 317 housing units with 21 vacant housing units.

The next meeting of the Ellendale Council is scheduled for July 28 at 7:30 p.m.
