The Lions roared loud and clear when hosting their 5th Annual Community Cookout.  The 22-member local Lions Club in Ellendale, had a large number of their members on hand, helping with the cookout and serving up good food, to all those who came to support their fundraising event. All proceeds went to the Ellendale Area Food Shelf.

The Lions served hamburgers, brats, sauerkraut, hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans and beverages at the Ellendale Community Center, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday night, June 24th. About 200 people were served before they shut off the grills and turned out the lights that night.

Local people were encouraged to bring in donation items during the cookout. And the results were pleasing, as 218 pounds of food had been donated before the evening came to a close. Raffle tickets were given to those who brought food items to donate to the food shelf.

The Ellendale Lions Club invited visitors to view the freshly hung pictures of past events and sites from Beaver Lake, displayed in the Ellendale Council Chambers at the Community Center. Three large picture frames held 14 pictures of Beaver Lake events, many dating back to the early years.

Pictures in the display included the Beaver Lake Roller Coaster, which was in operation back in the late 1920s and 1930s. Also featured was a picture of Doc Ertels’ Cabin, one of the first cabins on Beaver Lake. Also viewed was the Old Bathhouse from the 1930s that was on the east side of the lake.

The remaining pictures included: Thompsons’ Boat House; Ellendale area people “harvesting ice”; Murtaugh Brothers Boat Rental which was in operation from the 1920s -1940s;  the Old Beaver Trail, Ardis and Noel Thompson’s bait shop and boat house, the Beaver Lake Launch in 1910;  and a picture of one of the Sloan family picnics held at the Beaver Lake Park.

The Lions also announced their plans for the next big local event, Ellendale Days, which will be held the weekend of July 14-17.  Plans once again include “food wagons” at the T-Ball tournament and girls fast pitch softball tournaments on Saturday.  T-Ball will be played on the ball field south of the school, and the fast pitch games will be played on the fields north of the bus garage.

Once again the Lions will have the “Dunk Tank” set up “downtown,” so people can use their throwing arms to “dunk” their favorite people on Friday night.

The Lions also plan to hold their rummage/white elephant sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. at a new site, the City Maintenance Building. Local residents are invited to bring their donated items to the City Maintenance Building from 12-5 p.m. on Friday.  Sorry, no clothing. Bath fixtures or appliances will be accepted.

The Lions have a great slate of activities planned for Sunday as well, including their annual pancake breakfast which will be served from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Community Building.  The menu will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, milk and coffee for $6.50.  Children 4 and under are free.

A tractor pull is also included on the weekend schedule for Sunday, as well as parade.  The Ellendale Days parade will get underway at 4 p.m. and will make its way up “mainstreet,” for all to enjoy; the local Lions plan to have a unit in the parade again this year.

The local Loins Club officers, President, Allie Larson; Secretary, Gail Skroch; Treasurer, Millie Paulson; Lion Tamer, Dan Nelson; and Tail Twister, Don Peterson, along with the rest of the group thank everyone who supported their Community Cookout on Friday night.  The Lions also hope that people will turn out to support the many Ellendale Days activities planned for July.

The Lions club members are kept busy all year long with activities that support their community. They plan to hold their second annual Beaver Lake Home Tour later this fall. They hope that the people of our area will support that activity as well.
