The New Richland Legion Jazz baseball team seems to be having a fine season this year as they played host to the Hayfield squad and took both games of a double header Thursday, June 23. Both games were halted after six innings. The next day they added two more wins over a tough Adams team.

Jazz 7, Hayfield 4 (Game 1)

Jake Staloch and David Lassahan led the offense for the Jazz in the first game of the two game tilt each getting two hits. Pitcher Mitch Akemann allowed only two runs through the first four innings, with Sam Lundberg coming on in relief part way into the fifth. Each hurler had four strike outs and allowed 10 free passes combined.

“We allowed too many walks in this game and didn’t really have many hits,” said Jazz coach Mark Tollefson. “We were lucky that Hayfield made some critical errors that let us score some runs.”

Jazz 5, Hayfield 1 (Game 2)

The second game saw the Jazz’ bats come alive as most players had at least one hit with Akemann going 2 for 2. Lundberg pitched all six innings of the second game giving up three hits, one run, walking two and striking out seven.

“Lundberg pitched a good game,” said Coach Tollefson. “Our strong defense really shut down Hayfield.”

Jazz 2, Adams 1 (Game 1)

The Jazz had to endure another two games the next day Friday, June 24. Adams made the trip to New Richland’s Legion Field and went home with two defeats.

It was a tight contest as Staloch went 2 for 2 and Lassahan went 2 for 4 with each having a double and a single. Matt Dahle, Akemann, Dillon Parpart, Eric Sorenson, Preston Peterson, and Brad Claycomb each getting single hits.

Lassahan pitched the complete six innings. He gave up four hits, one run, walked four, and fanned  10.

“Matt [Dahle] had a crucial squeeze bunt in the fifth inning, scoring Lassahan who started that inning with a nice double and then a stolen base,” said Coach Ed Dahle. “That made the score 1-0. Hayfield tied it up in the top of the sixth inning. Lassahan had a nice single in the bottom of the sixth to bring in Eric Sorenson which scored the go ahead run.”

Jazz 9, Adams 4

In the second game, Staloch had two hits for the Jazz. Akemann, Johnny White, Parpart, Sorenson, and Claycomb each added a hit a piece. Staloch went the distance in the second contest, allowing four hits, four runs, walking three and striking out nine.

“Both Staloch and Lassahan did a very good job of pitching in the two games,” said Coach Dahle.

Byron 4, Jazz 3 (8 innings)

This game was started on June 14 in Byron, but was rained out in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the score tied, 2-2. The game was continued in New Richland on July 1. It was supposed to be a double header but the second game was rained out.

Lassahan had started the first three innings before the game was postponed and Mitch Akemann completed the game. Leading hitters were: White 2 for 3; Akemann 2 for 4; Lassahan, Staloch and Parpart each getting hits.

The Jazz play a doublheader at Stewartville Thursday, July 7 in. Playoffs start July 11.
