Fifteen years later, she is still a nursing assistant.
“My grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's,” Kelley said. “That was my 'a-ha' moment. This is who I am.”
She is employed with Country Neighbors, a facility that specializes in memory issues. She has been a nursing assistant with them for two a half years.
“Country Neighbors is a great place to work,” Kelley said. “My boss is wonderful, co-workers are fantastic, residents grand. We are a family.”
Sometimes, while performing her responsibilities of preparing meals, providing personal care, giving medications, participating in activities, she needs to be stern implementing safety procedures and securing the overall well-being of residents.
"The residents love her, even if she has to put her foot down," said Brenda Hagen, Country Neighbors Director.
"Just like Lucy on Charlie Brown, I'm a little bossy at times, and say it like it is," Kelley said.
"Autumn is happy go lucky with an infectious laugh,” added co-worker Yvonne Kalke.
An essential aspect of her "art" of care giving, includes respect, wisdom, and honoring differences. Her personal motto is to treat people like you want to be treated, and with the utmost dignity and respect.
"I'm just a caretaker that likes to learn new things daily, and see people grow," Kelley said.
Kelley is a very hands-on caring and compassionate person who truly loves what she does. She is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those who graciously live inside her heart every day.
Nursing Assistants Week provides an opportunity to join together to raise respect in the health care settings for workers, residents and clients across the country.
We are blessed to have wonderful nursing assistants, like Kelley, dedicated to providing quality care for our loved ones. Please remember to express your appreciation for all that they do.
