Mayor Steve Bailey brought the Geneva City Council meeting to order on June 14. All councilmen except Taff Worrell were in attendance.

Janell Tufte made a motion to approve bills payable, minutes and the financial report. Rich Weckwerth seconded and the motion carried.

Discussion soon turned to Geneva Bar & Grill’s request to hold a street dance on Saturday, July 23. No one opposed to the idea. Permission was granted.

Bailey then noted that the city pool opened up on June 13. He went on to tell the council about the pool’s recent break-in. Shortly after the actual incident, city maintenance man Steve Nielsen, came to Bailey’s house with the bad news.

Two life belts were stolen and damage was done to the door. Bailey called it in, so the break-in is officially on record. Nielsen already fixed the door.

Anyone interested in the pool services are encouraged to come out this summer. The cost is $50 for a family, which includes lessons as well.

Late items started off with Councilman Weckwerth asking about the status of Jaguar’s interest in serving Geneva. Cornelius chimed in, and said a Jaguar representative contacted her just last week. The representative wanted to speak with Councilmen Taff Worrell, so she passed along Worrell’s number. She hasn’t heard anything further about the matter.

Janell Tufte’s turn to voice any town concerns, she opened up discussion about the city’s blue banners displayed around town. As many of them are pretty battered, she would like them taken down. The council agreed that when the fire department puts up the American Flags for July 4th, the banners can just as easily be removed then.

Councilmen Jim Beenken then inquired about the electrical outlet needed for the concession stands and such for the baseball diamonds. Without hesitation, Bailey told Beenken that a 110 voltage is needed for the power source.

All present then dove into further dialogue about the baseball activity around town. According to Bailey, the baseball diamond is used quite frequently. On Thursday nights, the girls have fast pitch. And the T-ball players on up to third and fourth graders run those bases often as well.

Next, Bailey pulled out a letter from the NRHEG city park and recreation department. The letter outlined the department’s inquiry for the yearly donation amount given by the council. Bailey said that in years past, an amount of $1000 or $500 is typically given.

He also noted that any amount the council decides to give; the department would greatly appreciate it. So, Tufte then made a motion for a $500 donation. Beenken soon seconded, and the motion carried.

Bailey had two more updates for the councilmen. He contacted Jamie Jensen to get going on the last pond to be filled in on the outskirts of town. Then, in regards to the electricity and gas provider topic, he hasn’t heard any news from Alliant or Steele Waseca Cooperative. He believes the entire process will take awhile to get squared away.

The next Geneva city council meeting will be held on July 12, 2011 at 7 p.m.
