Nursing Home week, celebrated since 1967, is a week not too many people know about, but, for nursing home residents it's probably the busiest week of the year.

The New Richland Care Center celebrated Nursing Home Week May 8-14.

“National Nursing Home Week honors the residents, caregivers, and volunteers who work in nursing homes,” said Kathy Flor, NRCC Activities Director.

For residents at the New Richland Care Center, the celebration began with a special Mother’s Day Dinner, followed by daily themes. Monday was Hats or Crazy Hair Day. Tuesday was Hawaiian Day, with a special performance by the NRHEG Jazz Band. Farmers Day, Wednesday, included an exclusive concert by the NRHEG Choir. Western Cowboy Day was on Thursday.

The NRHEG Youth Service Leadership (YSL) class participated in Nursing Home Week Activities at the New Richland Care Center. They built the archway structure and decorated, transforming the nursing home community room into a grand ballroom for the annual YSL Prom.

NRHEG YSL assists senior citizens with home projects, such as, weeding, washing windows and raking. They also help at community sites, including Country Neighbors, the Daycare Center, the Preschool, and the New Richland Care Center. They do anything asked from maintenance to activities, four days a week.

"Youth Services is a nice thing for Nursing Home week. The kids are always willing to help the residents," YSL Instructor Georgia Dineen said.

The NRHEG YSL class also participated in the week’s finale, a special presentation in honor of Nursing Home Week. YSL students Kyle Bayerkohler, Kristina Cole, Lisa Dummer, Alexis Tieskotter, Alearah Neumann, Michael Smith, Jake Reed, David Lassahan, Hunter Eustice, Matt Dahle, Jake Staloch, Carter Tollefson, Katie Carlson, Emily Light, Rachel Ledding, Anna Schlaak and Evan Ferber wrapped up Friday, May 13th, dressed in fanciful attire escorting residents down the red carpet, so to speak, giving the dress-up prom an exciting ambiance.

"I love seeing all the pretty dresses," said resident Marlene Dodd.

"It makes the residents feel special,” said Penni Mueller, NRCC social worker. “It reminds them of past memories. It's a perfect day for them.”

The prom included a diversity of music. There were polkas, waltzes, and big band of eras gone by, not to mention the chicken dance, electric slide and the macarena of present day.

"No matter what your age is, people like to dance," Ledding said.

"I'm having fun," said Norman Johnson.

"This is pretty cool," said Tollefson.

Interaction between all generations, family, and community members is the goal of New Richland Care Centers Nursing Home Week. It provides fun for all.

Other memorable highlights included Mr. Cyr doing a jig, a solo presentation on air guitar by Eustice, and Reed educating others on the difference between lavender and periwinkle.

"Residents are all smiles,” Flor said. “It’s good for them to interact  with the kids.”

The New Richland Care Center nursing home residents and staff encourage all to celebrate those who make a positive difference in their lives every day.
