Area Memorial Day events set

Veterans organizations will celebrate Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2011 in accordance with the following schedule. Please set aside time to attend one of these featured events in commemoration of those who have and are currently serving our country in the military. As citizens of the United States of America, we especially pay tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of life so we may experience freedom in the United States of America.

Ellendale Area — American Legion Post #296 and VFW Post #8941, along with the Ladies’ Auxiliaries, will provide Memorial Day Services on Monday May 30, 2011 at the following times and locations, weather permitting:

8:30 a.m. - Holy Trinity Cemetery, Litomysol

9:15 a.m. - St. Aiden’s Cemetery, Bath

10:15 a.m. - Geneva Community Cemetery, Geneva

11:15 a.m. - First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ellendale

The American Legion and VFW Posts will provide an honor guard and firing squad at all locations. A message fitting the day will be delivered at the Geneva and First Lutheran Cemeteries by Jody Wynnemer, United States Navy, Retired. He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon. 

Mr. Frank Whitcomb will be directing the NRHEG Junior High School Band at Geneva and Ellendale, as well as, providing Taps. The Junior High School Band faithfully provides inspiring selections which are appreciated by all who attend.

All area veterans and those currently serving in the military, are asked to participate. Meet at the Ellendale Community Building at 8:00 a.m. If you have any questions please contact Larry Otto at 507-475-1023.

Freeborn — Beginning at 10 a.m., veteran’s graves will be decorated at Hatch Cemetery. State Representative Rich Murray will be the featured speaker at the program commencing at 11 a.m. at City Hall. Lunch will be served at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following the program, for those who desire to attend, graves will be decorated at Freeborn Cemetery.

Hartland — The service will begin with a parade down the main street to Cross of Glory Church at 9 a.m. The featured speaker will be John Rhiger, Freeborn County Veterans Service Officer. Refreshments will be served at the church following the service,

New Richland — The day will begin with all veterans and everyone interested assembling at the Legion building at 8:30 a.m. Cemeteries will be visited in the order named: Calvary, St. Peter, St. Olaf, LeSueur, Vista Lutheran and Vista Covenant. At 10:45, parade units are to assemble at City Hall for the parade to Central Park. The program will begin at 11 a.m. with Al Batt as the featured speaker. Music will be provided by the NRHEG High School Band. In case of rain, the program will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church. A chicken dinner will be served at Trinity Lutheran Church following the program. All servicemen and women are urged to take part whether you have a uniform or not.

Waldorf — The Waldorf American Legion Post #587 Memorial Day program will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the school building located at 144 North Street. Guest speaker will be Gary Bohm, former Commander of the Waseca American Legion. There will be Readings and Music selections by JWP High School students. The program will be followed by a parade to the Community and First Lutheran Church Cemeteries. A potluck dinner will be held at noon at the Community Center.
