"When you’re least looking, opportunity knocks," says Cheryl Johnson.

A stylist since 1988, Johnson is excited to become a member of the small business owners in Ellendale.

"Everything happens for a reason," Johnson said.

On April 27th, Johnson closed the deal on her new venture. After a few simple cosmetic changes, she opened the doors of Downtown Hair Design Incorporated, (formerly Barb's Styling) located at 115 Fifth Avenue West on May 3, 2011.

"Making a difference in the lives of others, while making people feel good about themselves," is something Johnson strives to achieve. Johnson, a self-described "people pleaser," is dedicated to providing good quality service. She plans to continue on what the previous salon owner started, and introduce new things too.

Johnson knows the importance of building relationships. She is determined to "be herself." Johnson recognizes the significance of gaining clients’ trust, and going with the flow. Some clients may challenge her. She is aware not to take it personally, allowing it to roll off her back, because she loves what she does, and that cannot be replaced.

Currently, Johnson offers haircuts, colors, perms, waxing, shampoo sets, complete family hair care needs. Business hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays by appointment.

Halloween, Johnson’s favorite holiday, promises to be eventful at Downtown Hair Design Inc., because she loves disguises, and being a goofball. Therefore, reserve your appointment today, so you don't miss out on all the fun.

Johnson, a mother, stepmother, wife, and now small business owner, is prepared to find balance in the daily hats she wears. However difficult, Johnson is dedicated to leaving work, at work, when she has completed her working day. Home and family time will be exactly that. She knows firsthand that a good, solid upbringing for her boys is essential, to plan for the future.

"Courage is different for everyone, trying new things, being able to make mistakes, learning by example, a good work ethic, and to keep on trying,” are the secrets of her plan to success, said Johnson.

Johnson also finds “sacred value” in alone time. Not unlike many of us, she converses with herself, dabbles in painting, gardens, and always finds moments to laugh, especially at herself.

"Life feels hectic sometimes, days quickly pass by, it's important to remember the 'now,' and take note of every day," Johnson said.
