All members were present as Mayor Tom McShane called the regular meeting of the New Richland City Council to order on Monday evening, May 9. The evening’s agenda and consent agenda items were both approved.

The council approved Resolution 11-13, which authorizes advertising for bids for the upgrade to the Waste Water Treatment Facility. The project will enable the city to meet state guidelines for phosphorous content in treated water, and will replace equipment at the WWTF, which has deteriorated over time.

Police Chief Scott Eads noted a busy April for his department with 90 calls for service and an additional 92 contacts. Two burglaries were reported, one residential and one business. The county attorney’s office is reviewing the investigation for possible charges. Eads encourages city residents to remain vigilant in their neighborhoods.

“We ask anyone witnessing suspicious activity to please notify the department as soon as possible and we will check into it,” said Eads. “Even if something seems insignificant, if the activity piques a resident’s interest, there may be something to it.”

The annual event for local residents to update their pets’ vaccinations was held on April 16th at city hall. There were only 10 dog license renewals issued.

“We remind residents who missed the event that they still need to keep their dogs, and now cats licenses updated as per city ordinance,” said Eads. “The license is only $5, but the administrative penalty for an unlicensed animal is $25.”

Care Center Administrator Mikenzi Hebel presented the monthly financial statements for the NRCC. It was announced the first check for flood damages has finally been received in the amount of $17,425.87. Hebel said she is still obtaining quotes for flood insurance from several agencies. She also reported she has been chosen for a Minnesota Age and Disabilities Service Award to be presented on June 20. The mayor and council congratulated Hebel on her selection.

Ambulance chief Jenny Johnson announced the department has logged 98 runs so far in 2011. Johnson and the council discussed issues with area coverage which have arisen. Johnson will be attending a meeting with area EMS personnel to iron out the issues.

Fire chief Jeremy Parpart requested $1,650 for state licensing for all department personnel. The council approved the request. Parpart said the department’s brush truck is in the repair shop; cost estimates are unknown.

Harvey Radke was present representing the Community Growth Initiative. He was seeking funds for a biobusiness-related venture. The council agreed to refer the request to the Economic Development Authority.

After several ideas of how to fund new playground equipment at St. Olaf Lake Park, the council decided to move forward with the purchase, which will replace the old wooden structure currently in place. Funding sources include two donations, city park reserves and funds being held at the county level.

Quotes for the repair of electrical components at Legion Field were examined. Low bid was awarded to Delane Nelson Electric provided the job can begin immediately. Most of the wiring, including the field’s lights, were damaged by flood waters.

The last order of business was the seasonal employees at St. Olaf. Wages for first-year workers were set at $7.25 per hour for concession workers and $7.40 for lifeguards. The head lifeguard will earn $8.30.
