When the NRHEG girls’ basketball team was asked to help serve at the Hot Beef Commercial at City Hall on Sunday, April 28, they were in for a surprise.

At noon, the Farm and City Days Committee gathered everyone together and announced the NRHEG girls’ basketball team had been chosen as 2013 Grand Marshal for the Farm and City Days parade.

Along with the hot beef, there was also a bake sale with cookies, bars, and cupcakes. People were also able to buy basketball T-shirts.

The only girls missing from the team were Carlie Wagner and Ryann Hagen.

When asked why the Farm and City Days Committee picked the team, Larry Goehring stated, “One of the guidelines for picking the Grand Marshal is how much the individual or group has done for the community. The girls have done a lot in getting the community excited. We’re hoping that the sense of community togetherness continues for a long time.”

“It came as a little shock to me,” said head coach John Schultz. “But I’m excited for them. After I found out, I just had to make sure to get everyone here without them suspecting anything.”

It looked as though Schultz did a good job. The girls thought they were there as a “Thank You” to the community for supporting them during the basketball season.

When asked, the girls all claimed they had no idea, and were very excited about being selected.
