Wagner verbally commits to Gophers

The waiting is over for Carlie Wagner and the University of Minnesota. The NRHEG High School junior made it official last Thursday night, verbally committing to play basketball for the Gophers. Wagner led the NRHEG girls’ basketball team to third place in the state tournament last year and won the state high jump championship last spring. The Panthers are 18-1 this season.


Open Arms program to speak to teens Friday

An informational meeting about Open Arms Yellow Ribbon Program (in memory of Jacob Sikel) for teens will be held Friday, Feb. 8 at the "Teen Night at Vibrant Life Church in Ellendale, 702 3rd St. SW. We will be speaking at 9 p.m. We want to reach out to children and teens and let them know its O.K. to ask for help! No matter the situation or time or place, there is always someone there for you. Everyone is important! We hope to see you all there.


Steele County Humane Society holding pet picture contest

The Steele County Humane Society is holding a pet picture contest in honor of Valentine’s Day. This year there will be two categories; one being pictures of you and your pet(s) showing how much you love each other, the other being of two or more pets showing how much they love each other.  

Cost is $5 per picture. Send pictures and fee to The SCHS; Attn: Photo Contest P.O. Box 220, Owatonna, MN 55060.  Include your name, your pet’s name, and your phone number along with the picture

Submissions should be post marked by February 21.  Winners will be contacted on March 2.

All pictures will be displayed at our Pancake Supper at the Eagle’s on March 15.

Prizes: Pet related Gift Baskets for 1st, and 2nd place in two categories: 1) Pets and people in the photo; 2) Just pets in the photo.



United Methodist Chili Cook Off set for Saturday

The Ellendale United Methodist Youth are hosting their 2nd annual Chili Cook Off on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ellendale. Cost will be $5 for adults and $4 for children.

We are asking for cooks to enter their favorite chili recipe.  Award categories include spiciest chili, original recipe, and a people's choice award.

Contact Dan Sorum at 688-0514 if you would like to enter your chili. Otherwise, please plan on joining us for the supper and help raise money for youth mission trips.



Central Freeborn F.R.O.G. Party Saturday

There will be a F.R.O.G. Valentine’s Party held at Central Freeborn Lutheran Fellowship Hall. The party will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. 

At 6 p.m. there will be a Pop and Pizza Fellowship followed by Norwegian Bing with prizes at 7 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., ice cream with toppings will be served as well as a signing of valentines for Sheet-Ins. Finally at 9 p.m., there will be a drawing for door prizes. Cost will be $5 per person. Please bring a friend along with you! Bring a white elephant item or two for $1 table. Contestants sought for Miss Saint Patrick

The Irish American Club of Southern Minnesota is looking for young women to run in the Miss Saint Patrick and Miss Irish Rose Pageant.

Competition will take place on Saturday, March 9 and Saturday, March 16 as part of the Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in Janesville. Contestants must be between the ages of 16 and 18 and be of Irish heritage. Medical scholarships available

Naeve Hospital Auxiliary will award three $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea service area that have selected the medical field as their chosen vocation.

All scholarships are provided on the basis of academic ability, leadership, commitment and character. Complete scholarship information and applications are available from counselors in area high schools or at the medical center. Applications must be returned to Kathy Leidal, Public Affairs, Mayo Clinic Health System, 404 W. Fountain St., Albert Lea, MN  56007 by March 13, 2013.

Applications will be reviewed by the Naeve Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee. Those receiving scholarships will be notified in late April.
