Verdell May Ludwitzke, age 78 of Cannon Falls and formerly of Winona and New Richland, died on Thursday morning, December 13, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Verdell was born on December 24, 1933 in New Richland, MN the daughter of George and Florence (Baumann) Billing.  She graduated in 1951 from New Richland High School, and went on to Mankato State College. She graduated in 1960 with a Bachelors Degree in Education.  She married Dennis Ludwitzke on June 11, 1960 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New Richland. 

Verdell was an elementary school teacher, starting in Kenyon and Dodge Center. They were residents of Winona for 32 years, and were active members of Central Lutheran Church.  Verdell sang in the choir, taught bible school, and was involved with bible study.  She did substitute teaching in Winona for many years, and had been a manager of Boardwalk Candies in Winona.  They retired and moved to Cannon Falls in 1996. She was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, where she was in the church choir.

Verdell loved playing Bridge, and enjoyed the different groups she played in.  She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and cooking.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dennis; children, Todd of Cannon Falls, Bruce (Michell) of New Richmond, WI and Kris (Jeff) Prosen of Maple Grove; 3 grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Ludwitzke, and Jack Prosen; brother, Mervin (Marlene) Billing of Maricopa, AZ; and in-laws, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Margie Weckworth, Bob and John Billing.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 18 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy. 19 Blvd., Cannon Falls. Pastor Gary Schulz and Pastor Carol Sinykin will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers will be special angel drivers and friends.

Memorials are preferred to the music fund at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church.
