Geneva’s Dairy Night June 13

By KATHY PAULSEN

Staff Writer

What is so grand as a day in June? The fields and flowers are at their peak. There are weddings, Vacation Bible School to attend, and vacations to enjoy.

The school kids are enjoying their freedom from school. Actually, one might see them riding bike, playing in the park and then, there is June Dairy Night. There aren't many dairy herds locally any more, but there is still ice cream.

Warren Wayne and Don Gries started June Dairy Night probably 60 years ago by the side door of the store they had in Geneva, which is now Sorenson’s Appliance, giving out ice cream cones for free. Their customers and local people were more than happy to take part in the festivities and so it continued and grew into an activity put on by the business people of Geneva.

Through the years the band played, the community band played, talented local people sang and entertained those who came. It was a picnic of sorts, but it was a sharing time of food and fellowship. The children played, older people visited and listened. Picnic suppers were also held to support the park and recreational activities of the kids.

And, there was ice cream. Members of the business club dished out ice cream cones for everyone to enjoy. What once was a "treat" has become a stand by in most homes. It still might be the favorite dessert of choice.

Thanks to the Geneva Business Club, the Geneva Park will once again be the site of June Dairy Night.

The Business Club says, "Come and See Us on Wednesday, June 13th for Geneva's June Dairy Night and Ice Cream Social."

There will be a bake sale starting at 5:30 p.m. It is hoped many residents will bake their favorites and bring them to the park.

Any baked donations would be appreciated and can be dropped off at the park after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The business club members will be grilling hotdogs and serving them along with chips and pop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Hotdogs and chips will be available for $1.25 or $2 with pop.

Geneva's Park is in the middle of town and there is seldom a time you don't see the park in use during the summer. The tornado that came through our area a couple of years ago destroyed the dunk tank, but Heidi Wangsness once again plans to be in the park on June Dairy Night to "face paint" the youngsters.

DeeAnn Randall will provide the musical entertainment for the evening, and yes, there will be free ice cream cones starting at 6.

Jodie Dittrich is in charge of organizing the event this year, and the business people will all be doing their share. All proceeds will go toward the Geneva Business Club.

Don't forget to thank everyone for continuing this popular and pleasant event.
