Geneva City Council

On May 8, Mayor Steve Bailey called Geneva's monthly city council meeting to order promptly at 7 p.m.

Next, Andy Bernau, a representative from Hill, Larson, Walth and Benda, P.A., walked the council through Geneva’s audit report step by step. Bernau noted the city doesn’t have any collateral for their investments in cash and CDs, beyond the $250,000 mark. He advised them to look into the matter.

Next, the council was made aware of a new state statute involving contracts budgeted over the $25,000 mark. In the future, he encouraged all members to consider the state-purchasing venture. Or in other words, they must always obtain a project bid from the state before contacting local businesses.

The audit read to completion, Daniel Petsinger of Radio Link Internet graciously took the floor. As the CEO, Petsinger would like to seek permission to install equipment on the water tower, so as to provide uninterrupted service after Clearwave’s disconnect.

With his proposal of a 10-year contract, he hopes to receive $100 in rent for the site. He also sought permission to provide repairs and necessary upgrades.

As far as service goes, he guarantees “dedicated Internet” for potential customers with a small antenna measuring three inches wide and six inches tall. In addition, he noted that Radio Link Internet offers unlimited data usage with no contract signing whatsoever.

Councilman Taff Worrell chimed in with news that Jaguar is awaiting approval for construction in Geneva. Petsinger rebutted by mentioning his non-compete clause with said company. He further clarified by informing everyone that construction with RLI “could be rolled out in a matter of a couple weeks,” as opposed to a few months.

The matter discussed at length, Councilwoman Janell Tufte announced she would like to a do a side-by-side comparison with the other options under consideration. Not a moment later, Bailey expressed his thanks for Petsinger’s presentation and made a motion to table the matter for a month.

An hour in, Tufte and City Clerk Nancy Cornelius reported their findings for new playground equipment at the city park. Soon after, Councilman Rich Weckwerth made a motion to find a swing set priced for no more than $3000. The motion carried.

Bailey then gave attention to the patient Geneva residents in attendance at the meeting. They made their notion quick, by passing along the news of vandalism on their property. Plumb lines have been cut, pickup lug nuts loosened, etc. Luckily, the targeted vehicle was stopped just in time, avoiding any bodily harm. They immediately called the Freeborn County Sheriff. As a result, increased patrol has been ordered for that particular area of town. The council took it under advisement and promised to look into the matter.

Worrell soon piped in with a few late items for quick discussion. First off, Geneva Bar & Grill owners would like to seek permission for re-pavement of their parking lot. Secondly, a certain resident would like to purchase the land directly behind the baseball field fence. The council again took these matters under advisement.

Cornelius interjected with a kind request for Steve Nielsen, city maintenance man, to repair the door to the Geneva Community Center. Bailey made the last announcement of the night; hazardous waste day is set for May 30.

The council will meet again on June 12 at 7 p.m.
