The memorial service for Donald Hamilton will be held at Country Neighbors in New Richland, Minnesota on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Scott Williams officiating. Internment will be at St. Peter Cemetery outside of New Richland with military honors.

Donald, who was 100 years old, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at Country Neighbors, according to his wishes.

Donald was born December 14, 1911 in Parton, England to James and Sarah (Carr) Hamilton.  He immigrated to the United States with his mother and 3 of his siblings in 1920 after his father died at age 52 in a drowning accident. He grew up in Rock Springs, Wyoming and for a few years enjoyed being a cowboy with his good friend, Alec.  Donald later had a job with the Wyoming State Highway Dept shoveling and picking rocks which eventually led into surveying roads going into Yellowstone National Park.  He met the love of his life, Esther S. Michaelis, in Big Piney, Wyoming, where Esther was the superintendent of the school. They were married on May 30, 1936.  Donald started working for the United States Border Patrol in 1941 and continued until his retirement after 30 years of service.  He attended college in Minot, North Dakota & also in Grand Forks, at the University of North Dakota.  Don was a veteran of WW II and was stationed in the Southwest Pacific as a military policeman. He had entered the Army on September 15, 1943 and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lt on June 8, 1945. Over the 70+ years Don & Esther were married they lived in numerous areas of the United States but retired to New Richland to be closer to Esther’s family.  Donald was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Richland. Donald was an avid golfer & he spent multitudes of hours reading to keep his mind sharp.  He enjoyed driving his Cadillac to Florida where he and Esther spent many winters.  Donald adored his wife, Esther, and was her devoted caretaker in her later years when her health declined.  Don will be fondly remembered and missed by all the dedicated staff of Country Neighbor’s who cared for him.

Donald is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah Hamilton; his wife, Esther; and all ten of his siblings, Andrew, Isabelle, Eva, Minnie, Sally, James, Jack, Roger, Ambrose, & Janet.

Myrtle Ruth Skalicky, age 71, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Owatonna Hospital. 

Myrtle was born March 20, 1940 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky the daughter of Jack and Mabel (Justis) Bivins.  She attended school in Muhlenberg County.  She met Jerome Skalicky, while he was stationed in the Army, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  She married Jerome on June 11, 1957 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Litomysl.  They purchased the family farm in Aurora Township in 1960 and continued farming until they retired in 1985.  Following their retirement, they moved to Owatonna and in 1991 moved to rural Ellendale.  Most recently, Myrtle resided at Cedardale Apartments in Owatonna.  Throughout her years, Myrtle worked at Josten’s, operated her home health care business, and most recently, the Steele County Courthouse as a receptionist until her retirement.

Myrtle  was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Aidan’s Catholic Church.  After her retirement, she quilted with the ladies at First Lutheran Church in Hope.  She loved to knit, crochet, sew, and bake for her family and many friends.  

She is survived four sons, Allan (and Lisa Rae) Skalicky of Altura, Ronald (and Faye) Skalicky of Claremont, Steven (and Darla) Skalicky of Ellendale, and Jarrod (and Jacquelyn) Skalicky of Ellendale; three daughters, Debbie (and Hans) Andresen of Greenville, KY, Julie (and Dan) Gritz of Owatonna, Felicia (and Brent) Carlson of Edgerton, WI; fourteen grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Margie (and Larry) Hancock of Louisville, KY; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jerome, two granddaughters, two grandsons, and brother, Virgil Bivins.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, January 27, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Saturday from 12 noon to 1 p.m.  A rosary service will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be held January 28, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Litomysl with The Reverend Andrew Vogel officiating.  Interment will be in the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Somerset Township.  Memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.

Memorial services for Marlys Vernon Sorenson, age 82, of Clarks Grove will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Community Lutheran Church in Geneva.  Rev. Carrie McElfresh and Rev. Marlys died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea after a 10-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Marlys Vernon Sorenson was born on January 14, 1930 to Albert and Helen (Brynestad) Sorenson in Berlin Township of Steele County.  He grew up in Ellendale and attended school in Ellendale.  In 1951 Marlys enlisted in the United States Army.  On October 25, 1953 Marlys was united in marriage to Theresa Otterson in New Richland.  Marlys was a heavy equipment operator prior to working at Bridon Cordage until his retirement.  He was member of First Lutheran Church in Ellendale where he was confirmed and currently a member of Community Lutheran Church in Geneva.  He was also a member or the American Legion, Eagles, Elks and Moose Clubs, Sons of Norway and the Stateline Polka Club.  Marlys enjoyed camping, dancing, gardening, mechanics, reading, and woodworking.  He liked to go to tractor pulls and he and Theresa loved to travel many places.  Marlys loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Survivors include his children, Kathy (Milt) Solomonson, Karen Olson, Kay (Loren) Sames and Keith Sorenson (Monica Wallace); grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Wilde, Angela (Chad) Mundahl, Kelly (Kevin) Kruse, Brandon (Courtney) Dobbertin, Joshua Sorenson, Lindsey (Garrett) Schultz, Dustin Schroeder, Jaime Schroeder, and Mitchell Sorenson; great-grandchildren, Anthony Mundahl, Jordan Wilde, Damian Chaloner, Lilly Mundahl, Jayda Sorenson and Caden Wilde; siblings, Muriel Shaunce, Margaret (Clifford) Otterson, Bernetta Hanson, Donna Guevara, Donald (Caroline) Sorenson, Richard (Linda) Sorenson and Raymond (Glenda) Olsen.

Marlys was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Sorenson and Helen Guervara; wife Theresa Sorenson; great-granddaughter, Myah Sorenson; sister, Luella (Robert) Nelson, brother, Howard Sorenson; brothers-in-law, Lyle Hanson and Glen Shaunce.

The funeral service for Phyllis Idele Aronson of Ellendale, Mn will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2012 at First Lutheran Church, Ellendale, MN.  The Reverend  Richard Sliper will officiate.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will  be one hour before the service at the church.  Bonnerup Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Idele Gardner Aronson, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away January 17, 2012.  Phyllis was born May 30, 1914 near Stewartville to Alta and George Washington Gardner, the second of four children.  Phyllis graduated from Stewartville High School in 1932.  She went on to Winona Normal School with preparation for teaching.  Phyllis taught in rural one room schools in the southeastern part of Minnesota.  Mr. L.A. Arnold hired her from the Pine Island school district and she came to Ellendale for the 1938 school year, then stayed in Ellendale until 1943.  She then took a teaching position in the Hopkins school district, staying there during World War II.  She applied for an elementary position in New Richland, where she taught one year.  She then taught one year in Owatonna.  During this time, she also traveled to Chicago, New York, Seattle and the west coast with her sister Doris and friends from Rochester.

Phyllis and Joyce C.H. Aronson were married on July 27, 1947 at the Gardner farm near Oronoco, Minnesota.  To this union six children were born.  Phyllis quit teaching because she said she had a school room at home.  When her children were growing up, she volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, and a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.  After teaching for fifteen years, she kept busy by selling World Book Encyclopedias, Fuller Brush and Amway products.  Phyllis always raised a big garden and used the produce to make good things to eat.  She would have a treat ready when her children came home from school.  Phyllis loved to share her creations with neighbors.  When there was a celebration, she would invite neighbors and friends to share in the bounty.

The family is blessed with her memory.  The survivors are Carla and Burton Scripture of Motley, Minnesota; Paul and Ross of Ellendale, Minnesota; Linda and Ann of Roseville, Minnesota.  Grandchildren Helen Schubert of Story City, Iowa; Doris and David Steele of Grimes, Iowa; Beth and Ryan Klaahsen of Little Canada, Minnesota; Micah and Cassie Aronson of Geneva, Minnesota; step-grandson Dane Harvey of North Carolina.  Great-grandchildren Abby Schubert of Oklahoma; Garrett Schubert at West Point; Wesley and Keith Steele of Grimes, Iowa; Rhet, Lauren, and Cooper Klaahsen of Little Canada, Minnesota; Violet and Chrysantha Aronson of Geneva, Minnesota.  Brother-in-law Leo Wentland of Holdingford, Minnesota.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Alta and George W. Gardner, husband Joyce Aronson, son Jon Aronson, sister Doris Wentland, and brothers John Gardner and George A. Gardner.
