Nancy Cornelius loves Geneva, and it shows.

Because, for the past 30 years or so, Cornelius’ impeccable city clerk duties have not waned one bit.

“When asked if I would take this position almost 30 years ago, I figured why not,” Cornelius said. “I love secretarial and bookkeeping work and figured it would be a great way to give back for all the good things Geneva has done for myself and my family.”

Within the last three decades, there have been many duties to accomplish, all of which she has tackled with pizzazz. No longer working other full-time jobs, she can kick back a little and enjoy the privilege of arranging her own schedule.

“I am basically the secretary for the city, so I handle all the mail and letters the council requires. I also do all the paper work required of the city by the county and state,” Cornelius said.

She typically clocks in about 60 hours a month, which isn’t too bad really, she says. However, whenever election time rolls around, her world turns quite a bit more stressful.

“For me, it is not hard work,” Cornelius said. “It’s just time consuming.”

Other duties of hers include typing up the agenda, minutes and financial report for the city council meetings each month. She also records the minutes at each council meeting, and sends out any letters or contacts any persons as directed by the council.

“As part of the treasurer office, I  also send out quarterly utility bills for sewer, water and garbage service and am responsible for receiving and depositing these monies to the city accounts,” Cornelius said. “I do payroll for the city and all payroll taxes.”

Year round, she maintains the calendar for the Geneva Community Center and when groups desire to rent the facility out, she kindly liaises with all involved parties. Then, during the summer months, she handles the payroll for all the swimming pool employees.

“I have many reports to complete and send to the county and state level throughout the year too,” Cornelius said. “I stay in close contact with our insurance agent to make sure all city property is properly covered throughout the year. Clearly, my job has many different facets and I do enjoy them all.”

Mondays and Tuesdays are usually spent keeping up with city bookwork, reports and papers. But, she is available most any time to answer questions with regards to rental of the community center, property transfers and utility bills.

“I also handle all phone calls to the city as my phone number is the one listed for the city,” Cornelius said.

Highlights of the job include working with the various council members and making Geneva “a good place to live.” Really though, everything entailed with the job is incredibly hard to part with.

“When I was working full-time and raising a family, I’ll admit it was a little hectic at times,” Cornelius said. “But, I stuck with it and now it is a great retirement part-time job.”

She doesn’t want to throw around the words fully retired just yet though. At least not for the next five years.

“I don't want to watch time march by just yet,” Cornelius said.

So for the time being, happy residents and no major conflicts between city decision and residents spells success on her part. And as long as she remains a city employee, she will do her utmost to make decisions that better the city of Geneva.

“I enjoy looking back over the past 30 years and remembering all the city council members I have worked with and all the city improvements that have been accomplished,” Cornelius said. “I can only hope the residents of Geneva appreciate the work that has been done to keep this community alive and well.”

Although many of her ties to this “great little city” derive from paperwork, the attachment goes a little deeper. Geneva also just so happens to be where she grew up and raised a family of her own.

“I love the people of this town and hope that it continues to flourish,” Cornelius said.

She hopes everyone will keep up the good work, so that Geneva will remain a “rare, wonderful, clean, safe small town.” Her second wish: for neighborly care and concern  to never fade away.

“We have a great mix of ages,” Cornelius said. “Not only that, but we have two city parks, a city run swimming pool, three great places to eat and many local business places who offer customer service and great products. There are no empty store fronts, which is really something for a city this size.”

There are no buts about it; Geneva is the place she will remain for quite some time.

“Everyone does their part and it shows,“ Cornelius said. “All the support I have received as your city clerk/treasurer for so many years, I appreciate very much as well.”
