Through one quarter, it was anybody’s game.

By halftime, the outcome was decided.

Turnovers plagued the NRHEG football team in its upset bid at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Saturday night as the undefeated home team racked up 32 points in the second quarter and went on to end the Panthers’ season 53-28 in the Section 2A semifinals.

“WEM took advantage of our turnovers and their size and power running game was just too much for us,” said Panthers coach Dan Stork. “We turned the ball over four times in the first half and all four resulted in touchdowns for WEM. You can't do that against any team and win let alone the No. 1 ranked team in the state. WEM is a very good football team. We wish them the best of luck.”

Senior Geoff Ramaker had another big night for NRHEG, running 17 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Sam Lundberg also rushed 17 times for 63 yards but had trouble throwing the ball, going 5-for-20 for 71 yards and an interception.

A highlight for the Panthers was a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Dustin Esplan, who returned from an injury.

Sophomore Dillon Parpart and junior Casey Rosacker led the Panthers defensively with seven tackles each.

WEM improved to 10-0 overall and will host the section championship game Friday.

The Panthers finished the season 5-5.

“Overall, I was happy with the way our kids played,” said Stork. “I am really going to miss this group of seniors. They are a special group of guys that always gave 100 percent.”

Seniors graduating for the Panthers include Ramaker, Lundberg, Esplan, Lucas Meyer, David Lassahn, Spencer Hanna, Brandon LeBlanc, Seth Petranek, Carter Tollefson, Parker Peterson, Mitch Akemann and Sam Grothem.
