It was an up and down week for the NRHEG volleyball team.

The season, however, continued on an up note.

The Panthers improved to 6-1 in the Gopher Conference and reached the 20-win plateau with a 3-0 victory over Blooming Prairie last Tuesday and a 2-2 showing in Saturday’s Faribault Invitational.

Coach Joe Kuechenmeister expected a tough match against Blooming Prairie after the Panthers’ come-from-behind victory over the Blossoms earlier this season.

“We knew we were going to have a battle on our hands,” said Kuechenmeister.

But the Panthers came away with a sweep, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-13.

“The Blossoms played good volleyball despite an injury to one of their best players, yet we were able to turn it on in the latter stages of each game to come away with the 3-0 match win,” said Kuechenmeister. “We didn't play our best, but it's a good sign when you're still able to pull out a win when you're not at your highest level. That being said, we need to get more consistent as we wrap up the regular season and head into the playoffs."

Senior Anna Schlaak continued to lead the Panthers, totaling 14 kills, 6 digs, and 2 ace blocks. Others: Carlie Wagner 5 kills, 3 digs, 3 ace blocks; Jade Schultz 4 kills, 3 digs, 2 ace blocks, 4 ace serves; Harlee Vokoun 4 kills, 7 digs, 2 ace blocks, 2 ace serves; Noelle Bartness 37 set assists.

At Faribault Saturday, the Panthers defeated the host team 2-1 in the opening round (26-24, 22-25, 16-14) before falling 2-0 to another Big Nine Conference team, Mankato West (25-23, 25-8). They defeated St. Louis Park 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) and lost to Montgomery-Lonsdale 2-1 (25-22, 20-25, 15-13).

No individual statistics were available.

"Our play today was a real rollercoaster,” said Kuechenmeister. “We showed flashes of greatness, as well as a return to the unforced error problem we've struggled with throughout the season. It was huge for us confidence-wise to beat a great team like Faribault, who had only lost three matches prior, but we need to keep our energy up and play smarter in order to maintain a high level of play. We're getting closer, but we've got to use the next couple weeks to fine-tune some things heading into playoffs. If we do so, we could really make some noise in the section."

The Panthers hosted Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Tuesday in the season finale. It was also their Dig Pink event.

The sub-section tournament begins Oct. 27.
