It wasn’t the blowout a lot of people expected.

But it was a shutout victory for the top-ranked Class AA high school football team in Minnesota.

The injury-plagued NRHEG Panthers kept it close for the better part of three quarters but wound up falling 30-0 at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Friday night.

“I was very happy with our effort tonight,” said Panthers coach Dan Stork. “Our guys battled the entire game. Injuries continue to haunt us. We lost Carter Tollefson in the first quarter with a knee injury and Brandon LeBlanc in the second quarter with a possible broken rib.”

But the Panthers didn’t lose sight of the explosive Buccaneers until late in the third quarter.

WEM had trouble sustaining drives in the early going, punting on their first two possessions. They led 12-0 after one quarter.

The Panthers’ best scoring opportunity came in the second quarter, following an interception by Casey Rosacker. Sam Lundberg, returning this week from an injury, found David Lassahn with a pass to the WEM 1-yard line, but the Panthers failed to score on four straight line plunges.

It remained 12-0 at halftime.

The Bucs put it away with three third-quarter touchdowns, including a 26-yard interception return for a score.

The fourth quarter was scoreless.

The Panthers were outgained for the night 326-161 in total yards.

Lundberg was 9-for-20 passing for 78 yards and no interceptions. Brad Claycomb led NRHEG in rushing with 35 yards on five carries. Matt Carlson and Lucas Meyer caught three passes each.

WEM punted four times for an average of 53.3 yards, which included an 81-yarder, second best in state history.

Dillon Parpart had 12 tackles to lead the NRHEG defense. Seth Petranek was in on 11 stops and recovered a fumble.

The Panthers, 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Gopher Conference AA division, host United South Central this Friday.
