The NRHEG football team knows all too well how the Minnesota Vikings feel.

The Panthers, like the Vikings the first three weeks of the season, saw a halftime lead slip away as they allowed 13 points in the final 6:51 and lost their homecoming game 13-12 to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial last Friday.

The Panthers, playing without several injured starters — including quarterback Sam Lundberg — were besieged by second-half mistakes and penalties while falling to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Gopher Conference AA Division. LCWM improved to 2-3 and 2-2.

Our kids played hard,” said Panthers coach Dan Stork. “The first half we totally dominated the clock, running 45 plays to their 12.”

The second half was another story.

“We were only able to get two first downs the second half,” said Stork. “Once again, penalties killed us.”

The Panthers outgained the Knights 260-183 in total yards while being penalized eight times for 48 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Panthers lit up the scoreboard at 8:38 of the second period when David Lassahn hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Casey Rosacker. The drive covered 85 yards in 21 plays. The PAT failed.

On the Panthers’ next possession, Brandon LeBlanc broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown, but again the PAT failed and NRHEG led 12-0 at halftime.

The score remained that way until 6:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, when LCWM drove 38 yards in four plays, capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick was blocked.

LCWM matched 58 yards in 13 plays in the final minutes, scoring on a 3-yard run with 53 seconds remaining. This time the PAT kick was good.

LeBlanc ran for a career-high 161 yards on 31 carries. Kevin Minter gained 55 on 18 attempts. Rosacker was 2-for-5 passing for 27 yards with one interception.

Seth Petranek led the defense with 11.5 tackles.

The Panthers have a tough test this Friday when they travel to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, ranked No. 1 in the state.

“We need to get healthy and have a great week of practice going in to next's weeks game with WEM,” said Stork.
