The NRHEG volleyball team continues to look strong.

The Panthers ran their record to 4-0 in the Gopher Conference and 10-3 overall last week, falling to No. 2 ranked Jackson County Central while defeating Mankato Loyola and Medford.

On Monday, the Panthers hosted JCC and took the match to four games, winning the first 25-23 before falling 25-27, 25-20, 25-11.

"What a great match for our home opener!” said coach Joe Kuechenmeister. “A lot of great volleyball was played. We had flashes of brilliance at times, as well as occasional lapses, and ultimately untimely errors cost us in the end. That being said, we found out a lot about our team capability if we can reach and maintain that high level of play."

Individual leaders for NRHEG: Anna Schlaak 16 kills, 15 digs, 3 aces, 3 ace blocks; Carlie Wagner 12 kills, 4 ace blocks; Harlee Vokoun 6 kills, 6 digs; Noelle Bartness 45 assists.

"It was great to host and compete with one of the best teams in the state of Minnesota, and I think we certainly surprised them by grabbing that first game,” said Kuechenmeister. “We're gaining confidence and becoming more comfortable in pressure situations against quality teams, and that showed. Hopefully, that will benefit us come tournament time."

The Panthers traveled to Mankato the next night and swept the Crusaders 25-17, 25-10, 25-19.

"Though we didn't play our best, we were able to get another conference win on the road and that's big for us,” said Kuechenmeister.

The leaders: Schlaak 15 kills, 5 digs, 9 ace serves, 1 ace block; Wagner 13 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces; Jade Schultz 6 kills, 2 digs, 4 aces; Bartness 32 assists, 1 kill, 1 ace.

The Panthers hosted Medford Thursday and won 25-10, 25-18, 25-20.

Schlaak, a senior, was honored at the start of the match for 1,000 career kills. She topped 1,000 Sept. 10 at the Mankato tournament.

“It was nice to able to recognize such a big accomplishment at one of our first home matches,” said Kuechenmeister. “She's put the time in and worked hard to be the player she is today, and she's certainly deserving of the recognition.”

She again led the way, with 16 kills, 17 digs, 8 aces and 2 ace blocks.

Others: Wagner 8 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces, 1 ace block; Bartness 26 assists, 1 ace; Schultz 3 kills, 1 ace block, 4 digs; Tori Raimann 4 digs; Amy Thompson 4 digs; Harlee Vokoun 2 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces; Stormy Mulder 1 assist; Katie Cole 1 dig, 1 kill; Kalana Shurson 1 assist, 4 digs.

"We put on a nice performance in only our second home match of the season,” said Kuechenmeister “The gym was loud as Medford brought a lot of rowdy student fans, and I was overly impressed with our girls' ability to stay focused on the task at hand and get the job done."

The Panthers played Tuesday at home against Montgomery-Lonsdale. They play Thursday, Sept. 29 at USC and at the Blue Earth Area tournament Saturday.
