In week one of the 2011 regular season, the NRHEG Panthers fell behind early and lost late.

There was none of that in week two.

The Panthers put 20 points on the board in the first half and went on to a 26-0 Gopher Conference AA football victory at Minnesota Valley Lutheran Saturday afternoon.

“Our guys played very mistake free football today,” said Panthers coach Dan Stork. “We had a great week of practice and it showed. We were able to more than double our rushing yardage from week one.”

They also continued to throw the ball well, with senior quarterback Sam Lundberg going 12-for-22 for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

The Panthers’ first touchdown did not, however, involve Lundberg. It came on a 29-yard scoring pass from wide receiver David Lassahn to Lucas Meyer. It capped a 60-yard, 16-play drive and gave NRHEG a 6-0 first-quarter lead.

The Panthers made it 12-0 in the second quarter when Lundberg hit Lassahn with a 5-yard scoring pass, finishing a 59-yard, five-play drive.

Lundberg connected with Meyer just before halftime with an 8-yard touchdown pass to complete a 42-yard, five-play drive. Lundberg and Lassahn teamed up on the two-point conversion.

After a scoreless third period, the Panthers put the final points on the board with a 20-yard run by Lundberg early in the fourth. That finished off a 59-yard, seven-play scoring match.

“Everyone seemed to contribute in some way today,” said Stork. “I was very pleased with our team’s performance today.”

The Panthers dominated the statistics, outgaining MVL 316-89 in total yards and amassing 17 first downs to their opponents’ four. The Panthers outrushed the Chargers 171-47. They converted six of 11 third-down tries while MVL was 0-for-9.

Lundberg led the Panthers on the ground with 61 yards on 11 carries. Staloch ran nine times for 38 yards, Lassahn four for 30.

The Panthers were balanced on defense, with Staloch leading with five tackles. Meyer and Lassahn each had an interception.

The Panthers, 1-1 overall, face Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7 p.m. Friday in New Richland.
