The NRHEG girls’ basketball team had only one game last week, but it was a good one.

The Panthers played from behind for most of the night against United South Central, but came away with a 53-49 triumph Thursday, Feb. 11. NRHEG ran its record to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in the Gopher Conference.

The Rebels took a 28-27 lead into halftime and the Panthers battled from behind most of the second half.

“USC is a tough team with two great post players that are huge mismatches for us, and their guards stepped up and hit some big threes,” said NRHEG coach Onika Peterson. “It was a great team win tonight.”

Marnie Wagner had a huge night while leading the Panthers with a double-double. She and her twin sister, Maddie, combined for 38 points.

The Panthers were 13-for-29 on two-point shots, 8-for-26 on threes and 3-for-8 at the free-throw line, compared to the Rebels’ 9-for-33, 7-for-13 and 10-for-18. NRHEG outrebounded USC 33-31. Both teams had 11 turnovers. The Rebels blocked seven shots.

Individual totals for NRHEG: Marnie Wagner 22 points, 13 rebounds, thee assists, three steals; Maddie Wagner 16 points, three rebounds, seven assists; Rachel Collins six points, two assists; Hailey Schuller three points, three rebounds; Kayley Camerer three points, three rebounds; Sophia Fischer two points, five rebounds; Kelly Harden one point, five rebounds; Emily Eder one point.

NRHEG’s JV won 49-9.

The Panthers play Friday at Bethlehem Academy and finish the regular season Monday, Feb. 22 against Triton.
