Normally, when one of the Wagner twins has a big night, the other follows suit.
That wasn’t the case in the 2015-16 season opener for the NRHEG girls’ basketball team.
Maddie made 10 of 12 shots from the floor and poured in 26 points as the Panthers pounded visiting Tri-City United 84-58 Tuesday, Dec. 1.
“It’s nice to start the season with a win,” said NRHEG coach Onika Peterson. “I think we held a great pace throughout the game. We were able to get TCU out of their full-court press. There are some gaps in our defense that we need to adjust. Overall, it was a great team win.”
And it was a great night for the Wagners, juniors who have been playing varsity since seventh grade. Marnie had a game-high 13 rebounds and four steals along with seven points. Gretchen Ramaker contributed 16 points, seven steals and five rebounds. Kayley Camerer scored 12, Hailey Schuller nine, Rachel Collins eight, Betsy Schoenrock four, Kelly Harden two.
The Panthers moved to 2-0 with a 62-52 nonconference victory over Fairmont in New Richland Saturday.
“Our guards picked up some fast fouls in the first half and we had to readjust defensively because of it,” said Coach Peterson. We looked to attack the basket much more offensively in the second half rather than just sit out at the three-point line.”
