Panther girls 2nd in NRHEG Invite

The NRHEG girls’ track and field team opened the 2015 season with the NRHEG Invitational Tuesday, March 30.

“It was nice weather for our first meet,” said coach Duey Ferber. “We saw some good performances, especially from our younger girls.”

Maple River won with 63 points. The Panthers totaled 63, Medford 53.

The Panthers had three firsts: Hailey Schuller, 110-meter high hurdles, 17.73 seconds; Maddie Wagner, high jump, 5-0; and the 4x200 relay team of Schuller, Erin VanWilgen, Maddie Wagner and Marnie Wagner, 1:56.95.

The Panthers had a slew of seconds: Maddie Wagner, 100 and 200; Marnie Wagner, 100; Schuller, 300 intermediate hurdles; Maddie Bartelt, 1600; Sandra Quezada, 3200; 4x800 relay (Kelly Harden, Quezada, Katharine Lewer, Micaela Vaale), 4x100 relay (Grace Kofstad, Erin VanWilgen, Wagner, Wagner), and 4x400 relay (Katie Cliff, Grace Kofstad, Maggie Malone, Vaale).

Other NRHEG places: Vaale, third, 3200; Schuller, third, long jump; Eder, third, discus; Marnie Wagner, third, high jump; Kelly Harden, third, 800; Marissa Mortenson, fourth, 100 hurdles and fourth, triple jump; Kallie Thompson, fourth, 1600; VanWilgen, fourth, 400; Hailey Westrum, fourth, 3200; Solveig Stafford, fourth, discus.

“It was nice to start with a small meet to get all of our girls competing,” said Coach Ferber.

Two days later it was on to the Waseca Invitational. The host team won with 115 points. New Ulm had 78, NRHEG 46, JWP 17.

Schuller had a strong meet, winning the 100 hurdles in 17.25 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 55.59. She teamed with VanWilgen, Wagner and Wagner to win the 4x200 relay in 1:59.3 and was second in the long jump at 14-5.5.

“Hailey had a nice night,” said Ferber.

Maddie Wagner remained undefeated in the high jump, clearing 4-10 on a windy day.

“The girls are working hard,” said Ferber. “They had some tough competition tonight.”
