Panthers 4-0 after topping USC

By TROY THOMPSON

Sportswriter

The NRHEG wrestlers had their stamina tested last week as they faced six squads in three days. The Panthers split the stretch, going 3-3 as a team overall.

The Panthers dominated Maple River 43-16 on Thursday, Jan. 30 in what NRHEG coach Shawn Larson called their best match of the year.

“Of all of the matches this year, I feel like our team was on their best tonight,” said Larson. “Even in the matches we lost tonight, we were mixing it up well. I would have liked to have had a chance for them to have their best lineup tonight, but because of injuries they were a few weight classes short. We can feel good of how we performed and try to build on that as the tournaments are closing in on us quickly.”

Cordell Peterson (126) and Jet Wayne (152) recorded pins in their matches for the Panthers. Cole Lenort, Dillon Kubiatowicz, Cole Staloch, Trey Hoppe, Keith Maxon and Todd Erickson also recorded wins for the Panthers on their matches.

NRHEG faced some stiff competition from Class AA power Albert Lea and Class AAA schools Lakeville North and Owatonna on Friday, Jan. 30th.

The Panthers were swept in the competition by their big-school foes, going 0-3 on the night.

NRHEG’s Todd Erickson, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class A, recorded pins over Lakeville North’s Tyler Rodewald and Owatonna’s Goy Tut, but suffered a rare loss against No. 2-ranked (Class AA) Tristan Westerlund in a 5-0 decision. Albert Lea is currently ranked No. 3 as a team in Class AA.

Panther wrestlers also faced some of the top-ranked Class AAA individuals in Peyton Robb (106, Owatonna),Tanner Cole (126, Owatonna) Wade Sullivan (126, Lakeville North) Brandon Moen (152, Owatonna), Lucas Westrich (160, Lakeville North), and Trystyn Hanson (195, Lakeville North), but still managed to battle to close matches overall.

The Panthers rebounded from their Friday fatigue to fight off Hayfield and USC in convincing fashion on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Cole Lenort (113), Jet Wayne (152), Nick Bartness (170), Matt Jensen (195), and Jon Weller (220), all recorded pins for the Panthers in a 61-13 win.

Cordell Peterson (126), Cole Staloch (132), and Palmer Peterson (145), each recorded pins in their bouts during a 37-20 win over Hayfield.
