Basketball team earns berth in national tourney

A group of local fifth and sixth-graders (also known as Southern Storm) have been competing in the Twin Cities metro area this spring playing AAU basketball. The team is off to a great start, going 12-1 in their first four tournaments.

During the weekend of May 14-15, the team competed for the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS) Division III Spring Championships, also know as the “Quest for the Rings.” They played their best ball yet and after three victories, the Storm found their way into the championship game against a team called Southwest Slam, a squad comprised of boys from the Marshall/Willmar area. With a 59-53 victory over the Slam, the Storm assured themselves of getting the rings. Each player on the team will receive a Josten’s ring (much like a Super Bowl ring) that they can keep forever. Along with winning the Spring Championship, it also gave the team a berth to the National Championships held in late July in Greensboro, NC.

“The cool part about this whole thing is our team consists of kids from only NRHEG and to go play against traveling all-star metro teams that are hand-picked and beat those teams says a lot about the quality of basketball we are playing,” said coach Darian Baker.

The team also went out into the community and solicited donations to help cover the costs of uniforms and entry fees for the tournaments. With the generosity given by these organizations, the team was able to raise over $1,900 and keep the cost to each player very minimal. Listed below are the businesses that supported the Southern Storm basketball team: Waseca Sand & Gravel, Sorenson’s Appliance & TV, J&C Trucking of Baldwin, Broskoff Structures, SunOpta, Waseca-Clarks Grove Vet Clinic, State Bank of New Richland, Midwest Repairables, Brian Wayne – Pioneer Seeds, Geneva Bar & Grill, Lerberg’s Foods, Jensen Heating & Air Conditioning, Russ Nelson Electric, Al’s Body Shop, Round Bank of Waldorf, Tim’s Repair of New Richland, Brekke Homes & Construction, Robert Peterson Farms and Misgen’s Auto Salvage. The entire Southern Storm Team would like to extend a heart-felt “thank you” to everyone that supported the team this spring.

Now the team has a big decision to make on whether or not they proceed in making plans to attend the national tournament in North Carolina. Being in the heart of basketball country and the colleges of Duke and North Carolina only a short drive from Greensboro, it would be an experience the boys would never forget. If you are interested in donating to their trip, please contact Darian Baker at (507) 456-1283.

Donations can also be sent directly to Darian Baker at PO Box 276, Geneva MN 56035.
