Just think what the NRHEG softball team could do with Jade Schultz in the lineup.

Schultz’s slow but steady recovery from major knee surgery continued and the Panthers continued to play mostly solid ball without their injured star, winning three of four games in the past week.

The Panthers 10-runned Medford 11-1 Monday, May 6, fell 8-4 to Randolph the next day and bounced back to sweep WEM in a Friday doubleheader, winning 3-1 and 5-4 at New Richland’s Legion Field. Coach Wendy Schultz’s crew improved its record to 8-2 overall, 6-2 in the Gopher Conference.

Kelli Harrington starred for the Panthers, hitting a home run over the center field fence, becoming the first player to clear Legion Field’s new home run fence. She also made a great defensive play from center field, throwing out a baserunner at third.

For the night, Harrington scored twice and drove in two runs. Haley Deml was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run, Tara Simon 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Also contributing offensively were Alyssa Esplan 1-for-2, double, two runs, one stolen base; Kayley Camerer 1-for-3, double, two runs, one RBI; Anna Stork 1-for-3, one run; Hannah Lundberg 1-for-3.

“Kayley and Alyssa both had line drive for doubles,” said Coach Schultz. “Tara continues to be consistent at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two very hard hit balls. Defensively, our team played well.”

Ryann Hagen made a great catch in right field and threw out a girl at first.

Anna Lundberg had a strong night pitching for the Panthers, allowing one earned run on two hits, with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Randolph 8, NRHEG 4

Camerer, an eighth-grader, was a force at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, one run and one RBI.

Deml sparked a key three-run fourth inning with a two-run double. Simon was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Hagen had a hit and an RBI. Anna Lundberg got a hit and scored a run.

Anna Lundberg took the pitching loss. She was reached for four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out one and walked two.

“We had been playing pretty solid defense the last four or five games,” said Coach Schultz. “Unfortunately the wheels came off tonight. We committed seven errors. Some of those were mental mistakes, which can’t happen. Hopefully we’ll bounce back for our doubleheader against WEM.”

NRHEG 3, WEM 1

The Panthers won the first game of the doubleheader with solid pitching and timely hitting.

Anna Lundberg was strong on the mound, allowing no earned runs. She gave up seven hits and five walks while fanning six.

Simon was 2-for-3 with a run. Harrington, Stork, Deml, Hannah Lunbberg and Anna Lundberg added one hit apiece.

“The girls played pretty well,” said Coach Schultz. “We got some timely hits when we needed them.”

NRHEG 5, WEM 4

Trailing 4-2 after two innings, the Panthers rallied with one run in each of the final three frames to complete the sweep.

Stork and Makenna Thiele led the way.

“Those two basically won the game for us offensively,” said Schultz. “They both were very aggressive on the base paths, too.”

Thiele belted two triples, going 2-for-3 with two runs. Stork went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs and two stolen bases. Simon had a hit and two RBIs. Anna Lundberg had two sacrifices for two RBIs.

Anna Lundberg gave up two earned runs on eight hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
