Wagner sets record as tracksters open indoors

The NRHEG track and field teams opened the season indoors Saturday with a five-team meet at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The girls had the better day for the Panthers, taking fourth with 81 points. Fairmont won with 194, USC/AC had 113, Albert Lea 93 and GFW 2.

Freshman Carlie Wagner picked up where she left off on the basketball court, taking first in four events including a school-record leap of 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump. She also won the 55-meter hurdles (7.61 seconds), the 200 (28.22) and the 400 (61.6).

“Carlie had a “Wow!” meet,” said NRHEG coach Duey Ferber.

Danielle Krueger was second in the 800 in 2:37.

Other NRHEG girls’ places: 4x200 relay, third (Alearah Neumann, Krueger, Abby Crabtree, Katie Cole); Amber Schmit, third, shot put; Neumann, third, triple jump; 4x400, fourth (Emily Habeck, Samantha Hogstad, Hailey Schuller, Abby Wacholz); 4x800, fourth (Krueger, Crabtree, Katherine Lewer, Habeck); Lewer, fifth, 3200; Jill Kalis, fifth, shot put; Crabtree, fifth, pole vault and sixth, 1600.

“We started off against three very strong teams this season,” said Ferber.

Fairmont was first among the boys with 204 points, followed by Albert Lea with 150, USC/AC 96, GFW 22 and NRHEG 21.

“We have a long way to go as a team, but we saw many good things from many of our boys today,” said Ferber.

NRHEG places: 4x800, fourth (Kyle Bayerkohler, Tyler Crabtree, Jade Waltz, T.J. Schiltz); 4x200, fourth (Ross Chester, Brian Billing, Evan Ferber, Hunter Eustice); Schiltz, fourth, 3200; Ferber, fourth, triple jump and sixth, high jump; 4x400, fourth (Ferber, Chester, Matt Webster, Eustice); Eustice, fifth, long jump.

“We faced three of the top teams in Southern Minnesota,” said Ferber.

The track teams were scheduled to start the outdoor season Tuesday at home. They travel to Waseca Friday.
