Offense, defense, pitching, baserunning. You name it, the NRHEG baseball team has done it well this spring.

The Panthers posted three more victories in recent play, improving their record to 9-1 in the Gopher Conference and 12-2 overall.

Most recently, the Panthers topped JWP 7-3 at Janesville Monday.

Mitch Akemann led the offense, hitting a home run while going 2-for-2 and scoring twice. Tyler Sorenson and Sam Lundberg were both 2-for-3 with a double, Lundberg driving in three runs. Matt Dahle was also 2-for-3.

Lundberg started on the mound and went five innings, giving up one earned run on five hits, with eight strikeouts and four walks. David Lassahn pitched two innings of two-hit scoreless relief. He struck out three.

“We got a solid start from Lundberg,” said Panthers coach Jeff Reese. “The team had the ‘post-prom blues’ as the intensity wasn’t there. We did just enough to win.”

The Panthers blew out Medford 17-3 in five innings at Legion Field in New Richland Thursday, May 3.

Every NRHEG starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

Leading the hit parade: Jacob Staloch 2-for-4, double, three RBIs; Casey Rosacker 2-for-4, two RBIs; Akemann 2-for-2, double; Lundberg 1-for-1, three runs, two walks.

Nic Mangskau went the distance on the hill for NRHEG, allowing two earned runs while fanning five and walking one.

Rosacker had the defensive play of the game at third base. With Medford runners at first and third, he fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner coming to third and fired to Lucas Meyer at second to complete a big double play.

The Panthers edged USC 5-4 at Wells Tuesday, May 1.

Lundberg, who hadn’t pitched since April 9, started and went 6 1/3 innings on the mound. He gave up two earned runs on four hits, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

“It was good to see him pitch well,” said Reese.

Tyler Sorenson was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, Meyer 2-for-4 with a double, Mangskau 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI, Lassahn 1-for-4 with a double.

The Panthers turned another key double play, with Mangskau catching a fly ball and throwing to Meyer for the second out.

“We need to toughen up our defense in the infield,” said Reese. “We also made a couple baserunning miscues. Overall, we are playing sound and exciting baseball in winning close ballgames.”

The Panthers host USC Thursday. They play Tuesday, May 15 at Blooming Prairie
