Root series comes to a close
By DEB BENTLY
Staff Writer
The document is easy to find online: “America’s Wars.” A summary by the Department of Veterans Affairs which lists the number of soldiers who served in our country’s conflicts from the American Revolution to the worldwide war on terror.
The numbers are too large for genuine comprehension, but they imply story after story of sacrifice, determination, and patriotism. Vietnam: 8,744,000. Korea: 5,720,000. World War II: 16,112,000.
As shown by the stories of the Root brothers, published the last few weeks in this paper, each soldier joined the military, or a specific branch of the military, for his or her own reasons. In the case of those who were drafted, they had little choice, but even then they made the choice to serve.

A New Richland man is facing charges for allegedly shooting a gun into the air and then shooting at a vehicle last month outside Geneva Bar.
Dustin Grey Smitty, 22, turned himself in on a warrant in the case on Thursday at the Law Enforcement Center in Albert Lea.
He appeared in Freeborn County District Court in front of Judge Ross Leuning Friday on two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon — one each for the two people who were in the vehicle that was shot at — along with one count of ineligible possession of a firearm and one count of reckless discharge of a firearm.

NRHEG Secondary principal of 10 years, David Bunn, has resigned effective with the end of the 2022-23 school year on June 30. His resignation was accepted by the school board during its May 15 meeting.
In a letter written to staff, Bunn said that he has decided to “pursue new opportunities.” The change, he said, is “the right one for me at this stage of my life.” His wife, Jennifer, will continue as a teacher at the NRHEG Elementary site; his three children, twins Payton and Parker, and sixth-grader Sofia, will continue attending school in the district.
As for Bunn, his letter said he considers to weigh his options as the school year winds down. “I need a change in my life,” his letter told staff. “This is the best way to accomplish it.”
