NEW RICHLAND – The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team hit the 90-point mark for the first time this season with a 90-35 trouncing of Maple River at New Richland Friday.

The Panthers won 86-20 and 79-9 against Maple River last season.

NRHEG improved to 3-0 in the Gopher Conference and 5-0 for the year.

MR fell to 0-2 in the Gopher and 2-4 overall.

“We did not shoot well from behind the arc again,” said NRHEG coach John Schultz. “But we made up for it with 26 offensive boards.”

NRHEG had to play without starter Hannah Lundberg who was ill, but it didn’t take the Panthers long to establish their dominance. NRHEG cruised to a 56-17 halftime advantage.

Coach Pat Churchill’s New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva boys’ basketball team appears to be for real.

The Panthers rallied from behind twice to win Gopher Conference road games against United South Central and Maple River.

The Panthers climbed to the top of the conference with a 3-0 record, and made it six straight wins this season.

USC

WELLS – NRHEG rallied from eight points down in the final four minutes to edge USC 68-67 at Wells Dec. 17.

The Rebels, who defeated NRHEG 74-51 and 70-62 a year ago, fell to 1-1 in the conference and 3-2 for the year.

“USC is a tremendous basketball team,” said Churchill. “For us to find a way to win tonight made it a really nice win. These kids surprise me more every night.”

Despite a winless week, the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva wrestling team made a couple of nice showings.

Coach Shawn Larson’s Panthers lost a close decision to Maple River, and then topped the 100-point mark at the Redwood River Riot.

NRHEG takes a 6-4 overall record into the holiday break.

Maple River

MAPLETON – The Panthers jumped out to a 17-0 lead at the start, and led with three matches remaining, but dropped a 37-33 verdict to Maple River in Mapleton last Thursday. NRHEG eliminated Maple River in the opening section match last season.
