The NRHEG wrestling team stepped into the arena with the big boys Thursday, Jan. 24.

It was not a good night for the Panthers to be missing individuals.

A shorthanded NRHEG squad dropped three dual meets at Rochester, falling 55-22 to St. Charles, 48-25 to Faribault and 41-27 to Rochester John Marshall.

According to coach Shawn Larson, the Panthers put themselves behind the eight-ball by showing up shorthanded.

“When that happens, you are giving the opposing team a lead to begin with and it is very hard to come back through that,” he said. “I do not know of any sport where it is a good idea to spot your opponent 24 points. At this point in our room, we don't have the bodies to fill all of the weights.”

Nikolas Petsinger, Thor Routh, Tyler Jacobson and Quinten Arndt got wins for the Panthers against St. Charles.

Winning against Faribault were Nikolas Petsinger, George Roesler, Ralph Roesler, Makota Misgen and Arndt.

Annabelle Petsinger, Nikolas Petsinger, Andrew Reich, Jacobson and Arndt posted victories against JM.

Panthers nipped by one on home court

After a weather-filled week, the NRHEG girls' basketball team got back on the court Jan. 31 with a home game against JWP. The Bulldogs fell behind quickly as the Panthers showed little rust in jumping out to a 32-point halftime lead. "The girls looked to run, attacked the basket, and rebounded strong," said coach Onika Peterson. Nothing changed in the second half as the home team cruised to an 80-40 victory, with contributions from many players.

Sidney Schultz was on fire all night and finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Darian Pearson was a monster in the paint with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and an assist. Alexis Anderson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards along with 6 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. Hannah Budach and Sophie Stork each had 9 points; Budach added a rebound, an assist, and 2 blocks while Stork also had 3 rebounds, an assist, 2 blocks, and 5 steals. Sarah Johns chipped in 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Erin Jacobson scored her first varsity points by nailing a 3-pointer. Caitlin Goette and Lexie Ignaszewski each added a point; Goette also had 7 boards and 2 assists and Ignaszewski grabbed 3 boards. Kendall Johnson had 2 rebounds and 2 steals while Jayna Finseth snared 2 boards.

The next night, another crazy Gopher Conference game ensued as Blooming Prairie visited New Richland. Just like in their previous meeting this season, the Blossoms worked their way to a first-half lead, scoring often in transition and grabbing offensive rebounds on many trips. However, a 9-point halftime lead was not destined to stay.

BP too much to handle in NR

After losing three straight to the top teams in the Gopher Conference, the NRHEG boys’ basketball team was ready to snap the streak at last-place Medford Monday night.

But it didn’t start out that way.

The Panthers turned the ball over early and often.

“It’s not exactly the way you want to start,” said coach Isaiah Lundberg.

The positive was that the defense did not allow Medford to score. They eventually settled down and came home with a 65-60 victory.

“As the first half got going, the pace picked up and we started to make some shots,” said Lundberg. “I thought we did a good job of handling their press in the first half.”

The Panthers led 30-24 at halftime.

Jacob Schuller scored 16 points to lead the Panthers, who got 15 from Brady Agrimson, 14 from Kordell Schlaak and 12 by Blake Ihrke.
