Lonnie Wilson didn’t just break the NRHEG school record in the long jump.
He obliterted it.
Wilson, a junior, sailed 21 feet, 9 inches at the Byron Chuck Ramthun Invitational May 2, setting not only a new school record but the meet record as well. The Panthers’ old record, 19-11, was set in 1994 by Eric Anderson.
The NRHEG boys finished fourth as a team. Pine Island won with 167 points, followed by Stewartville with 149, Byron 138, NRHEG 103, Medford 76, Rochester Lourdes 52 and Kasson-Mantorville 29.
Wilson’s record wasn’t the only excitement for the Panthers.
The 4x400-meter relay team came from behind to win in .02 seconds, with Agro Gushwa running the anchor leg behind Mason Ferber, Jacob Schuller and Teddy Gushwa. They clocked 3:39.41.
Before suffering a back injury that forced him out of the 300 intermediate hurdles, Brady Agrimson won the 110 high hurdles in 15.55, was third in the triple jump and fourth in the high jump.
The Panthers’ other first was by Ferber, who won the 300 hurdles in 42.48.
Daniel Nydegger was second in two events, clocking 2:09.79 in the 800 and 4:54.96 in the 1600.
Other places: Wilson, fourth, 400 and sixth, 200; Schuller, fifth, 200; Ferber, fifth, 110 hurdles; 4x200, fifth (Gushwa, Gushwa, Schuller, Charlie Nissen); Alex Buckmeier, fifth, shot put and sixth, discus.
“It was an awesome meet with fantastic competition,” said NRHEG coach Duey Ferber. “The 4x400 was the race of the night.”
The boys finished first at the Blue Earth Area Invitational April 26. Team scores: NRHEG 133, Blue Earth Area 122.33, Martin County West 64, LCWM/N 37.33, MT/GHEC/ML 20.33.
There were plenty of firsts, four by Agrimson, who won the 110 hurdles in 15.34, the 300 hurdles in 41.71, the high jump at 5-10 and the triple jump at 39-9.5. Buckmeier swept the weights, winning the shot put at 45-10.5 and the discus at 120-2. Wilson was first in the 200 in 24.7. Nissen, Teddy Gushwa, Matthew Mueller and Max Seltun won the 4x100 in 49.56 and Ferber, Schuller, Gushwa and Gushwa took the 4x400 in 3:40.26.
Other places: Ferber, second, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles; Wilson, second, 100 and 400 and third, long jump; Caden Riewer, second, 1600 and third, 800; Schuller, second, high jump; Agro Gushwa, second, high jump and third, 400; 4x200, second (Nissen, Gushwa, Gushwa, Schuller); 4x800, fourth (Eric Arvis, Ralph Roesler, Nik Petsinger, Conner Nelson); Seltun, sixth, 200.
“We had a very good night considering a few of our boys were limited or not competing,” said Coach Ferber.
