The school record keeps falling, but you get the feeling the best is yet to come for the NRHEG boys’ 4x800-meter relay team.
Tyler Schlaak, Nate Krause, Josh Fleming and John Cole teamed up to break the school mark again last week, clocking 8:31.99 for the Panthers’ only first in the Section 2A True Team meet at Wells.
But the conference meet is this week and, after that, post-season and possibly a trip to the state meet.
“They continue to peel off of their school record,” said coach Duey Ferber.
The NRHEG boys were eighth among 14 schools with 467.5 points in the True Team meet Tuesday, May 10. Minnesota Valley Lutheran won with 703.
After the relay, the Panthers’ best finish was third in the shot put by Zeke Erickson with a toss of 41-8.5 and third in the 4x400 relay by Agro Gushwa, Nate Krause, John Cole and Josh Fleming in 3:42.5.
Brendan McMann cleared 10-6 for fourth in the pole vault. Gushwa cleared 5-10 for sixth in the high jump.
“This was by far the toughest competition of the season,” said Ferber.
The NRHEG girls finished seventh with 499.5 points while Blue Earth Area won with 777.
Hailey Schuller, Caitlin Goette, Marnie Wagner and Maddie Wagner combined for second in the 4x200 relay in 1:55.23.
Sophia Fischer finished third in the shot put at 33-10, Schuller was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.76. Maddie placed fifth in the high jump at 4-8 and sixth in the long jump at 14-4.5.
“The 4x200 was a little banged up but still managed a second place,” said Ferber. “This was the toughest competition we’ve seen. Many of these teams will be in our sub-section.”
