Maddie Wagner had a big game and so did her twin sister, Marnie.

It added up to victory for the NRHEG girls’ basketball team.

Maddie scored 16 points and added eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots as the Panthers picked up a 55-39 Gopher Valley Conference victory at United South Central Friday, Feb. 13. Marnie scored 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, seven steals and one block.

The Panthers, 12-9 overall and 8-3 in conference play, led 31-26 at halftime and pulled away in the second half while holding the Rebels to 13 points.

“USC is a very physical team an have strong inside play,” said Panthers coach Onika Peterson. “Our focus coming in was to really take away their posts sealing underneath the basket, as well as limit Schultz from the three-point line. Schultz ended with 2-3 pointers compared to her five the last time we met.”

The Panthers’ Rachel Collins contributed seven points in the win, while Gretchen Ramaker and Kaylie Camerer netted six each. Ryann Hagen scored four.

“We were able to get up early,” said Peterson. “We had a couple of key rebounds early on and were able to run against them. USC definitely gave us a tough battle. They rebound the ball well, and have a very strong structured offense. We had eight girls scoring, and two in double digits.”

The junior varsity won 60-29.

The Panthers traveled to Fairmont Tuesday, Feb. 10 and dropped a 68-48 nonconference decision.

Maddie Wagner led the way with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Marnie Wagner had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Also scoring: Collins five, Ramaker four, Camerer four, Hagen four, Hailey Schuller three.

The JV won 33-29.

The Panthers have three upcoming home games, Feb. 19 against Southland, Feb. 20 with Bethlehem Academy and Feb. 23 against St. Peter.
