Albert Gordon “Cob” Kath, age 73, passed away, June 13, 2019, at home on the farm, surrounded by family.
Friends may greet the family from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2019 at the Brick Meger Funeral Home, Owatonna and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. The funeral service will be 11 Monday June 17, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Meriden.
Cob was born July 15, 1945, in Waseca, MN to parents Albert and Margie (Studer) Kath.
Cob grew up in Waseca, and attended country school and high school in Owatonna through the 10 grade. He then returned to the family farm to work alongside his parents and brother. Cob married Linda Johnson August 9, 1969 in Medford, MN. Cob and Linda made their home on the family farm where they raised their four children. In 1970, they started a partnership with Cob’s brother Ron, milking cows, raising hogs, and a little bit of everything else.
Cob, known to many as Grandpa Cob, enjoyed horses of all kinds, especially draft horses. He often used them, instead of a tractor, to complete daily chores and field work. He took great pride in hooking up the horses to his potato digger. For Cob’s children, the excitement only lasted the first row, where they tried to find the biggest potato, but it quickly turned into a dreaded all-day job. He loved to compete in plowing contests, farm team hitch classes, and also participating in local parades.
Cob’s family will remember him for having mock horse shows, with Justin Shendel, ‘the judge’ who showed no favoritism between his uncles. The highlight of Cob’s horse career was when he traveled to Denver, Co. to compete in the National Farmer Hitch Class in 1998. In 2015, Cob bought his dream truck, a Chevy Silverado High Country. He and Linda traveled all around the Midwest in that truck visiting friends and family.
He loved to attend grandchildren’s ballgames, barrel races, and cattle shows. Cob enjoyed a good game of horseshoes or cards for a dirty job.
Cob is survived by wife, Linda of nearly 50 years; children, Tammy (Brad) Lewison, Owatonna, Lisa (Eric) Kyllo, Blooming Prairie, Mark (Paula) Kath, Hollandale, MN, Karen (Wes) Michaels, Ellendale; grandchildren, Hannah (Alan) Dicke, Grant Kyllo, Garrett Kyllo, Grace (John) Hubly, Graham Kyllo, Summer Kath, Ava Kyllo, Lex Lewison, Cole Kath, Gavin Lewison, and Tate Michaels; great-grandson, Oliver Dicke; sibilings, Ruth Schendel, Elmer Kath, Eldon Kath, Esther Johnson, Ron (Kim) Kath; sister-in-law, Kay Kath.
